Vertov support in Firefox 3.6

I have started using Zotero to manage interviews and notes for reporting and have found this to be a really useful tool. It would be even more useful if I could use the Vertov extension to annotate my interview audio from within Zotero. However, I am running a recent version of Firefox (3.6.6) and Vertov doesn't seem to be compatible with newer versions of Firefox.

I unzipped the vertov.xpi file and updated the manifest file to try to bypass versioning issues hoping the extension would just work, but there seem to be additional version incompatibilities. Has anyone found a way to get Vertov to work with recent versions of Firefox? It seems like there hasn't been a lot of activity with Vertov recently. Is the project still being maintained.

Best,
Geoff
  • Unfortunately, it seems that the Vertov project is currently dormant or dead. It would be nice if it were taken up by some group with a long-term interest in maintaining it, since it provides a nice set of additional features for Zotero. I would personally like to see it integrated into the core Zotero code, since it, to a degree, just augments the set of document types that Zotero knows how to meaningfully annotate.

One of my colleagues is head of a funded project that has done some impressive work on annotated video, both on the system side and in content development (legal skills instructional materials). Their current platform is a closed source tool developed in-house, but they are interested in other avenues, and I think they would be willing to go open-source if there was a viable base to work from.

My colleague expressed interest when I sent him links to some screenshots and the Vertov project page. I wrote to the Vertov folks on his behalf back in October of last year, proposing possible collaboration and asking about the status of the project. I didn't receive a response, and didn't push further. I don't know what direction my colleague's group has moved in since last year, but it would be useful to have a clear signal to pass along to him.

In case anyone from Vertov is listening in, I'll ask ... what is the status of project? Are the original developers available to answer questions? Or is the source just up for grabs?
