Can't communicate with Zotero intermittently

I am running the latest versions of zotero and open office with the appropriate plug-in. Some days when I try to insert a citation, I get the message, "Open Office could not communicate with Zotero. Please ensure Firefox is open and try again." Firefox is open at the time. Some days it works normally - nothing has changed in between.
Can anyone help?

    that's most likely it - people report intermittent problems with Zotero and Zone Alarm:
    apparently disabling zone alarm is not enough, it needs to be completely uninstalled

    Thanks, that could well be it. Thinking about it, it hasn't worked at all since the last Zone Alarm update a couple of days ago.

    Uninstalled Zone Alarm then reinstalled without the forcefield toolbar, as suggested in the forum discussion above. Zotero now working perfectly. Thank you
