Trouble with installing new style

I made a new style, then tried to install it using the instructions on the zotero website (saved at plain text, with .csl , then dragged file to firefox and clicked on install), and then got the error message 'This XML file does not appear to have any style information associated with it. The document tree is shown below.' With the code below it... Where did I go wrong?!

Cheers, Kate
  • I think that's the standard message (if it's in the grey bar on top of the page) and it sounds like you're doing everything right - does the style not show up in Zotero?
If not, you'll need to upload a style somewhere for troubleshooting - impossible to tell w/o seeing it.
    (try gist.github.com e.g.)
  • Yes, it is at the grey bar at the top... Where would I look to find it if it has installed properly? Is it meant to be Preferences -> Styles ? I cannot find it...
  • Yes, it should show up there. You can also check in the list of styles in the text pane
    chrome://zotero/content/tools/csledit.xul

As I said, for anything else I need to be able to look at the style.
  • Does this work?
    git clone git://gist.github.com/460494.git gist-460494
  • how can you tell if that style is installed or not - it's name and id are indistinguishable from the pre-installed ASA?

I'd guess that if you actually look at the ASA style in the test pane you'll see it's your version.

If you want it to show up next to the pre-installed ASA style, you need to change its name and id.

    Otherwise the style looks fine.
  • OH of course... I forgot, I changed the name then changed it back... Now I feel silly :)
    Thanks for your help!
  • is there a problem with the current ASA style that should be corrected? It's not particularly well maintained, so that's very well possible.

If you want to keep your style you should change not just the name but also the id - styles are updated occasionally (on updates I believe - though I've never quite understood this and I'm half expecting Dan to correct me) and if your style has the same id as ASA it'd get overwritten.
  • OK thanks,
No there wasn't a particular problem with ASA that I was trying to correct, it was just that that style was the closest to what I wanted, so I was editing it.
