Can't save an individual library project -- it saves everything as one file

Hi,
I'm trying to save a specific project that I've created in Zotero as a file in order to share that with someone (I'm working in the older version of Zotero since I have Office 2004 for Mac), but when I follow the directions on the Zotero site, it saved my entire library. Any ideas on how to fix this?
Thanks!
  • if you want to collaborate with someone _and_ use Zotero 1.0 (which isn't supported anymore at this point) your only option is to send her/him your entire library.

If you just want to share data but don't need to collaborate on a word file, you can select the citations in question and use
right click --> export selectected items --> Zotero RDF
  • Hmmm...I just tried that, but didn't get an option for "export selected items" (just "export library"). I only need to share data, not collaborate. I use a Mac -- any chance you know of something else I can try? I don't want to update since I then won't be able to use Zotero with my version of Word. If not, guess I'll have to take that plunge :)

I'm pretty sure that works somehow - version 1 and Mac makes it hard for me to give you a step by step, but if you select a number of items in the central pane you can right-click (or option click or whatever Mac users do) and select "Export selected items" - I'm near 100% sure that that is possible in 1.0

Edit: I 100% agree with bdarcus below.

If you're using Zotero 1.0 because of your word-processor, then I strongly suggest you change your word-processor (either upgrade Word or use OpenOffice). You're really limiting what you do (particularly for sharing) otherwise.
  • Zotero 2.0 is compatible with Office 2004 for Mac.
  • Huh -- I thought it wasn't compatible. Sadly, I'm a grad student and upgrading right now isn't an option :)
Thanks for all of the advice, everyone. Much appreciated.
  • If you're a grad student, a) are you sure your institution doesn't have MS site licenses (where you just pay the cost of the media)?, and/or b) have you tried OpenOffice?

In any case, I guess Simon's established that you don't need to upgrade you WP, so time to upgrade Zotero ;-)
  • Ok, so I just upgraded to the latest version of Zotero successfully, but still can't figure out how to share only a collection and not an entire library, either through forming a group, etc. When I highlight the references in the collection that I want to export, I still only get the option to save the entire library, not the selection. Any new thoughts?? Help!!
  • right-click on a single item in the middle - panel - do you see the option "Export Selected Item"?

Right-click on a collection in the left panel - do you see the option "Export Collection"?
  • I'm using a Mac, so no right-click option is available...when I highlight and go up to the "Actions" menu, I only get the option to export the entire library.
  • I'm using a Mac, so no right-click option is available
    Ctrl-click
  • I think that worked!! I'm a bit of a dunce when it comes to technology, so I really appreciate all the help.
