Tags column

Suggestion: how about a Tags column in the references list, alongside Creator, Title, etc? This would be very useful when quickly taking in the status of each article - as described by their tags.

I dont think it is useful because most times there are several tags attached to one item. According to your assumption, In the column, only one tag can be displayed, which makes the sorting function complicated.

I think something like this is too dependent on your particular workflow to work as a general solution. Sorting of multiple tags would also be an issue in such a column.

I imagined the Tags column to have all the different tags associated with an entry, sorted alphabetically, such as:
"may2010, unread"

The limited horizontal space could make this difficult to implement. Take a look at this discussion: http://forums.zotero.org/discussion/1787/simple-marking-of-items/ for a different planned feature that might provide something akin to what you are asking for.
