Keeping track of my printed stuff - does Zotero give a unique identifier to each document?

Hi,

I am pondering about how to organize my prints in the best way possible. I would prefer to have a unique number for each of the documents I have in my collection. So I could simply fill my folders print by print sorting by number, not having to think if I have still room in my folder for another paper e.g. starting with "B", if I would use the authors name for categorization.

Zotero does not seem to give a running number to each document, which could be displayed in a column in the collection.
Dear developers - Is it possible to add this feature, or do I simply miss it?

Thanks for any helpful comment

I second the motion. I often number my printed references in order to keep track of them more easily, and I would like to be able to sort them by number in my collections.
  • If you search the forums, you'll see this has come up many times. You'll also see me commonly recommending against such a filing approach ;-)

If you need to do this, you can note zotero does actually add an id to items. For example, here's one of mine:

That trailing number could be consider an id of sorts (though probably only unique within the context of a user?).
