Can't search through notes

Basic searches don't cover material from my own notes; Advanced Search doesn't seem to offer any way to extend searches to notes. Is there a setting or something I'm missing?

Word 2003; Zotero 2.0.2; Windows XP.
  • Basic searches don't cover material from my own notes
    Yes they do.
Advanced Search doesn't seem to offer any way to extend searches to notes
Yes it does. "Note" is a search condition.
  • Really, basic searches for text that is in my notes don't work.

Yes, in advanced search I can specify notes and get results.
  • Provide steps to reproduce (including creation and searching for the note) and a Debug ID for the entire process.
  • Steps to reproduce:
    - 'Byron' is referred to in my notes for a souce which isin my library on screen, but not in any of my other files.
    - I run a basic search for 'Byron'
    - There are no results

I ran 'report errors' and got this ID: 3964474 - tho' there's no error message when I run the search so I don't think this is relevant.

  • Sorry, but you didn't provide anything I asked for.
  • Ok, I understand - I think.

    Debug ID is D2086625061

    Thanks for being patient.
  • You have a tag selected in the tag selector.
  • Ok, that explains it. I wasn't expecting that the fact of having tagged a selection of sources would stop the search from looking through the notes - but I see that as the notes can be tagged as well that makes sense. Thanks for the help.
  • I think Ben's intuition should be Zotero's behavior, actually. Why shouldn't a search run with a tag selected search within the attachments and notes of an item that matches the tag selected? Such behavior strikes me as most logical; the association between notes, attachments, and items is strong enough (from the user perspective) for it to be unlikely for users to not be interested in whether child items match the search phrase.
  • Yes, this search behaviour would be welcome, for me at least.

For my purposes, when search results are in notes, the ideal situation would be that the search terms are highlighted in the notes pages - often these are quite long.
