'Could not save item' - Google Scholar(?)

Error report 827537497 refers.

When using Google Scholar, clicking on the folder icon so as to save references, I now get -
Error message:
"
Could not save item
An error occurred while saving this item
Check known translator issues for more info.
"

This is a new problem - I've been using Zotero successfully for some weeks (and am overall delighted). It occurs on both of my two PCs, one which runs Firefox and Zotero in English, the other in French.

I'm using Firefox 3.6.3. Extensions include Zotero 2.0.2, Google Toolbar and others known to have issues (RealPlayer, Skype). However I still get the error when all extensions are disabled and after Firefox restart. The error log shows JavaScript errors and makes reference to vulnerability CVE-2009-3555. I can save items that I create myself, and also URLs on which I right click.

Any ideas, please?
  • the CVE error is not Zotero related.
Do the NYT and amazon.com work OK?
could you give a sample google scholar search result URL?
  • I am experiencing the same problem and have tried everything recommended on the Internet. An example of search result URL would be:

    http://scholar.google.nl/scholar?q=service+innovation+funnel&hl=en&btnG=Search&as_sdt=2001&as_sdtp=on

    OR

    http://scholar.google.nl/scholar?hl=en&q=service+innovation+stage+gate+model&btnG=Search&as_sdt=2000&as_ylo=&as_vis=0

Thanks for any tips! Regards, JO
  • google scholar looks like it's broken

[JavaScript Error: "translator called select items with no items" {file: "file:///home/sebastian/.mozilla/firefox/wkxw8okh.default/zotero/translators/Google%20Scholar.js" line: 0}]
  • Just to add: Amazon.com works fine. It seems there are two different icons that can appear in the address pane - either yellow one or blue one. I get the yellow one for Google Scholar and blue for Amazon. And while blue works, yellow shows the above described error..

You mean broken in general or just in my computer? any idea how could I solve this? thanks
  • broken in general I believe.
  • ok. thanks. hope it works soon!
  • Mark again.

A failing Google Scholar search is:

    http://scholar.google.com/scholar?hl=en&as_sdt=2000&q=polanyi+tacit

Google Books and Amazon both work (despite having yellow folder symbols!)

Perhaps a change in Google Scholar has broken the existing translator? Google Scholar seems to be evolving fast these days... As such, it has become a very useful tool. I'm using it a lot as I transfer my references out of a hand-crafted Excel references library into Zotero.
  • This was due to a very small change in the search results page format. Please go to http://github.com/ajlyon/zotero-bits/raw/master/Google Scholar.js and save the file to the translators directory of your Zotero data directory (http://www.zotero.org/support/zotero_data).

It should start working again. If this works for you, please post here so that I can submit this one-character change to be pushed to all users.
  • Thank you for that very fast and effective response: I can confirm that the Google Scholar translator now works.
  • I made the change suggested and can now get citations from google scholar. However, when I try to add a citation into a word document I am getting the following error:

    Integration Error

Firefox could not load the component required to communicate with your word processor. Please ensure that the appropriate Firefox extension is installed and try again.

    I am using:

    MAC OS X 10.5.8
    Word 2004
    Firefox 3.6.3

  • I've pushed the updated Google Scholar translator. Thanks to ajlyon for the quick fix.
  • I've pushed the updated Google Scholar translator.
Are you sure? I don't see anything in Trac.
  • Pushing to clients is separate from SVN—I just hadn't yet committed the change. Done now. Thanks.
