Can't create bibliography in word without citations

I updated to 2.0 and updated my plugins as well. Now I cannot create a bibliography in word without text or citations as I had been able to before I updated. I get a message that states a bib cannot be created without a citation. Also is there a way to generate an annotated bibliography in word using the notes in zotero, again without text or citations?

  • annotated bibliography isn't as of yet possible (the notes cannot be called with csl. You can create an annotated bibliography using whatever is in the extra field and/or the abstract field - see Chicago style annotated bibliography on the repository).
    Two ways to create just bibliography:
    1. Select the items in Zotero (within Firefox), right-click, select create bibliography, to clipboard, copy&paste.
    2. Insert one citation, then insert bibliography, then delete the citation and before refreshing the document, edit the bibliography, adding all the citations you want.
  • I'm trying to create an annotated bib, too, using the abstract field as my annotation. The Chicago annotated style doesn't show any annotations in the example in the style repository, nor does it include the abstracts when I installed it and tried it. Is there some step I'm missing?
  • that style uses what's in the "extra" field.
    To change that to "Abstract"
    change
    <text variable="note" display="block"/>
    to
    <text variable="abstract" display="block"/>

  • Awesome, thanks!
  • My challenge is the opposite of tsnyder1 and emcleary. I use MSWord and I write in the area of history. I deal with a lot of items from archives (e.g., letters, reports, chronicles). There can be hundreds of them in a chapter which need to be cited in the footnotes/endnotes, but they are not usually individually listed in the bibliography. Maybe I missed something when I was testing this before I started using it for my latest work, but I thought I could generate a bibliography; then using "Edit Bibliography" remove items from the bibliography by highlighting an entry in the "references in Bibliography" list and pressing the green arrow pointing to the left. Unfortunately, that also removes the citation in the footnote/endnote. I tried using the editor to manually delete the entry, but it still leaves an empty line.

    Any suggestions?

    why would it do that? that's really unfortunate and should be changed.
    Until then - you could maybe purposefully "break" the citations in questions by adding, e.g. a space after them using the "show editor" function. That way they won't show up in the bibliography.
  • Thanks for the suggestion. It still shows up in the bibliography. The original information from the database is preserved and presented in the bibliography, which is probably a good thing. I'll not be needing the final bibliography for a few months. In the meantime, how do I request a change?
  • I've got a related problem: I'd like to generally create the bibliography with citations, but add some items without citations. (Like \nocite in LaTeX.) I've played around with this in OpenOffice, but could not get both kinds of items to show up in the same bibliography. Is this possible?
  • Although I'm not a Zotero specialist, I can tell about my own experience.

    For me, the problem was to distinguish several parts in the bibliography, although citations would concern all of them.

    I think the way I did it can be copied for other purposes.

    I entered all the items in one collection. I added tags to the items, so as to use them to select items in the advanced search, saving the results. By this way, I obtained different views in Zotero (some items appear in several views).

    The result is that I have a collection with several advanced searched lists, from which I can select items for citations, while writing the thesis.

    At the end, I will insert the bibliography section, by creating as many "bibliographies" as my several advanced searched lists.

    In case "There can be hundreds of them in a chapter which need to be cited in the footnotes/endnotes, but they are not usually individually listed in the bibliography.", I would use a particular tag, create a dedicated advanced searched list, without creating the corresponding bibliography.
