Integration with Web-based collections

I have been reading other's posts and without getting through all of them, I do realize the changes I am about to propose have probably already been proposed or thought up by your development team.

I just want to reiterate then what I see as the great importance of integrating this truly impressive extension with web-based services and collections. The ones that come most readily to mind to me include: Refworks, Del.icio.us, Ma.gnolia.com, as well as Google Notebook (or perhaps Jotspot?). Being able to more easily import/export records (links, citations, notes) from these existing services using Zotero would provide a huge incentive for users of these products to convert or at least begin using Zotero. It would also provide web-based access to some of Zotero's functionality without Zotero having to provide its own hosting, or users having to switch existing services. I know the development team is probably already aware of these issues (as well as some of the challenges they introduce), and I eagerly await to hear the strategy you devise for handling these.

Again, sorry for the probably obvious suggestions, but I really do think this would help many users (and potential users) integrate Zotero into their existing "information management" workflows.

Thanks, and this is really the most exciting software advance in reference management I have seen... you should be very proud!
  • Jon: You're right that we are planning integration with these web services as well as many others (e.g., Connotea, CiteULike) in addition to our own information exchange server. In fact, if you look at the developer documentation (another tab in the navigation above), you'll see that we already have a way for others to begin linking Zotero to other services. And if you (or anyone else reading this post) would like to help out with this integration, please contact utilities@zotero.org.

Thanks, Dan! I really hope that developers - including individual users and the companies themselves - are able to jump on board and begin developing these sorts of utilities.

An additional comment: A discussion last month on Read/Write Web (http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/social_bookmarking_faceoff.php) listed the great # of social bookmarking sites on the Web now. One of the major features people were looking for in this type of service was the ability to post to a single account and have it carry across all of their social bookmarking tools. It is exciting to think that Zotero could possibly do this sort of thing, as well as provide integration w/ social 'annotation' services like Google Notebook and Diigo, not to mention citation-based services like Refworks, Connotea, etc., all in one place. I did choose to post a mention of Zotero to the discussion above, but I am afraid it has probably been too long for anyone to see it.
