Library problem

Having recently upgrated, I restored the appropriate files and my storage file. I cannot now get the individual folders to restore. Checking in the storage folder reveals that the data is still there, however. This is odd. Any ideas?

Thanks

  • Upgraded what? Restored meaning what?

If you mean that you upgraded to Firefox 3.6 and then didn't see your library, you need to install Zotero 2.0.

If you mean something else, tell us what you mean.
  • Sorry about that. Upgraded to firefox 3.6, saved the appropriate zotero files before installing 2.0. I then restored as per instructions on zotero web pages. I can see my storage folder (preferences, advanced, etc) and can actually open individual items within the folder (when I open the storage folder in show data directory), but try as I might I cannot seem to get the individual libraries running. Any ideas?
  • What instructions? Upgrading to 2.0 simply requires backing up your library and clicking the Download icon on the front page. You shouldn't need to do anything else.
  • Yes, that is exactly what I did. The FAQ, believe it or not, offers instructions on how to back things up. I followed them. I then downloaded 2.0 and attempted to restore. My restoration problems are as per my earlier mailing.
  • What do you mean when you say "restore"? "Restore" is something you do from a backup.
  • That's right. I restored from a back up.
  • OK, well, then that's not "exactly" what I said, because I said nothing about restoring from a backup. Why are you trying to restore from a backup?
  • What instructions? Upgrading to 2.0 simply requires backing up your library and clicking the Download icon on the front page. You shouldn't need to do anything else.

I did this. And now I can see the entries (listed as numbers in my storage file) and I can even open them if I click on them individually. But the separate libraries, populated by the entries are not there and I cannot get them back. If you can help me with this problem then I would be grateful.
  • I have still not resolved this problem. Can anyone help please?
  • So it seems you can find your files in the file storage directory, but what exactly you can't find is unclear. What do you mean when you say you can't find these libraries? Your citations/items (apart from the attachment items you have located) are all stored in one sqlite file. Do you see the Zotero.sqlite file in you Zotero folder? Do you have Zotero running in Firefox, and what is in the left panel (nothing, just the main library, etc.)?
  • yes, it seems, oddly enough, that the files are present. I see no libraries as such, however. I suspect things have got rather muddled here. I have sqlite, sqlite.1 and sqlite.bak files in my zotero folder. I also have storage folder sqlite.36 too.
  • So I guess the question is whether your database is in good shape. Do you have Zotero running? What happens when you open it? Is your library just empty, or do you get any prompts? If it is just empty, try going to your preferences, and make sure Zotero is looking in the same location where you have your data stored (under the advanced tab). The default is in your Firefox profile. Read this page if you have not yet for more on your data: zotero_data [Zotero Documentation]
  • Could I be having the same problem? There seems to be a display problem. After upgrading, it seemed I had no files: prior folders in my library were displayed in Firefox, but no files. In the central section of Zotero, where files are displated, with headings of "Title" and "Creator," there is nothing shown. Yet the files are present in the correct disk location. It also seems that Zotero functions otherwise: files show up correctly in "Advanced Search"; I can add items, as usual by clicking -- verifying that they have been added by "Advanced Search"; it shows my tags in the display tag section, when I click on "Display all tags in this library." But when I click on the "My Library" icon or any of the folder icons within it, when the files should show up in the central portion, it is blank. I rebuilt the database by the Zotero website: no change. What do you think gives? Additional info: this is on my desk computer running Leopard. On my laptop, running Snow Leopard, there is no problem -- using the same, database (I use a portable disk).
  • And the things that show up in Zotero aren't "files"—they're "items". "Files" are what you see when you browse your filesystem.
  • You are right to correct my use of "files" since language precision is so important in conveying what the nature of the problem is. Thanks, and I appreciate your sensing it, anyway.
I had gone through all the incompatibles before, so I initially just shook my head; but then I thought I might just double check. Behold! I had missed one. And it was the culprit!
So thank you! Maybe this will work for Slackbridge?
  • BTW -- what is the script "chrome/....something" that slows everything down whenever I open up Zotero?
