Troubles with Zotero MacWord Integration after update to Zotero 2.0.2

Report ID 22213318

I'm working on an iBook G4 PPC with OSX 10.4.11, Firefox 3.5.8 and Word 2004 Version 11.1 (German language version).

After updating to Zotero 2.0.2, installing PythonExt 2.6.2 and the MacWord Integration 3.0b1, the communication between Word and Zotero does not work any more. When clicking one of the Toolbar icons, word gives a message saying that the currently installed PlugIn (1.0b3) is not compatible with Zotero 2.0.2. When I try to reinstall the word components via the AddOn menu in Firefox, it says "Neither Word 2004 nor Word 2008 appear to be installed…".

I checked the Word AddIn dialog and found the Zotero.dot file in the correct place. It could, however, be the file from the previous Zotero version.

I found several mentions of this problem in the forums, but none addressed the use of a non-English version of Word2004.

I really enjoy working with Zotero and hope to get it running again soon. Thanks for your help
  • Yes, you still have the old Zotero.dot, then. Delete it manually.

Is your copy of Word 2004 not at /Applications/Microsoft Office 2004/Microsoft Word?
  • Thanks for your help, Dan.

I have my copy of word2004 in another folder. Is there a way to get the correct Zotero.dot file in there manually? Where can I find it?

    Thanks
  • A localized folder, or just a custom folder?

The easiest way is to just temporarily move Microsoft Office 2004 to there, use Reinstall Word Components, and then move it back. Zotero tries another check in addition to the location, but that would appear to be failing for you as well.
  • It's in a custom folder. However, I tried to move the Office folder temporarily, as you suggested and the Reinstall Word Components seems to have worked. (At least no message appeared when clicking the button). Now (before and after moving Office back to its folder) the following error occurs in Word when I use the Zotero toolbar:

"UnicodeEncodeError: 'ascii' codec can't encode character u'/xe4' in position 126: ordinal not in range(128)"
  • As an addition: Word2004 states above said message that the document could not be successfully updated (in German). Is there a way to solve this problem, apart from going back to Zotero 1.0?
  • Can you provide a report ID for this new issue? We'll look into it.
  • Thank you for the reply. The new report ID is 1527390032

Does this have to do with the German version of Word?
  • I just took the upgrade to the ZoteroWord Integration 3.0b2 and filed a new report for the existing error: # 1820203528

Thanks for looking into the issue.
  • Can you download the MacWord trunk XPI (not the extension trunk XPI) try this again? It probably still won't work, but this should give us a more useful error message.
  • Thank you. The new report # is 751361623

Word gave me a message about permanently updating my document to the new Zotero standard, which I accepted. Now I can run the 'insert citation' routine, but word keeps refreshing (?) the screen over and over while firefox gives me the beachball. Right-clicking the FF icon in the dock states that the program does not answer. On my second try, I clicked in the still-open Zotero window where you select the desired citation and everything went back to normal. The citation loaded correctly.
  • Hi Dan, Simon,

after quittung to try to integrate Zotero in Word 2008, I want to go on working with my document in Word 2004 (see http://forums.zotero.org/discussion/5355?page=1#Item_13).

When refreshing the citations, I receive the same error message as stefanthurner

"Ein Fehler ist beim update Ihres Dokumentes aufgetreten.

UnicodeEncodeError: 'ascii' codec can't encode character u'/xe4' in position 126: ordinal not in range(128)"

I cannot find the IDs stated above, is there a solution so far? I would really like to get back to work...

    Thanks

    knippe
  • Sorry, do I have to download the MacWord trunk XPI? The site states that "and you may experience data loss at any time while using trunk XPIs". That is about the least thing I want...
  • The MacWord Integration Trunk XPI is not really very different from the released version from the moment (only two minor bug fixes different, one of which you need to be able to report the error you're experiencing to us), so data loss is highly unlikely. In any case, it's a good idea to make a backup of your documents before using it. (Do not install the Extension Trunk XPI.) The Integration XPIs don't have the capability to modify your Zotero library, so all you need to worry about is the documents themselves.
  • I just wanted to let you know that the communication between Word2004 and Zotero seems to work just fine (although a bit on the slow side) again after installing the trunk. I don't know what caused the "refreshing problem" I described in my last post, but that seems to be gone.

    Thanks again for your help!

    Stefan
