Zoreo icon not appearing in toolbar

Hi,

The zotero icon is no longer appearing at the far right of my web browser. It was fine yesterday. I am now not able to save a new item with bibliographic info, although I can take snapshots. The only thing I have done differently is re-sync from a portable version of zotero and download firefox & zotero updates.
  • I have been though all eight troubleshooting points from the 'troubleshooting translator' link. I have downloaded latest firefox & zotero, reset the translators, ensured they are up to date and enabled third party cookies. I have never had an unresponsive script warning while starting firefox. The problem still remains - there is no zotero icon in the address bar for any website - amazon, NYT, or pubmed. What is the next course of action?
  • Provide a Debug ID for loading a NYT article.
  • Also provide a Report ID (if possible) after loading the page.

Have you tried disabling other Firefox extensions?
  • I can't provide a report ID as zotero will save the file, but just wont save any metadata. Will try disabling my firefox extensions now.
  • I don't know what you mean by that, but you can certainly provide a Debug ID even if what you're trying to say is that Report Errors is grayed out.
  • Ok got a debug ID D120402162. Disabling firefox extensions hasn't made any difference
  • That's not a valid Debug ID. Copy and paste. Don't retype.
  • The Debug ID is D14631884. This is from the database where I access my data. The NYT and Amazon are working now. Some of my files in my library seem to be corrupted - I am unable to view PDFs that I could previously see via 'view snapshot'
  • So you're now reporting a new issue? If so, you need to provide more details—I don't know what "unable to view PDFs" means.
  • The main issue remains that I cannot save new bibliographic data to zotero and the icon is missing from the address bar. Probably best to sort that out first. Did the debug ID help?
  • You just said that NYT and Amazon are working, and the debug output shows an item being saved. So what are you reporting?
  • Metadata is not being saved

Sorry, but if you're not willing to take the time to provide proper bug reports, we're not able to help you.
  • I'm sorry I haven't made myself clear.

Saving an article from NYT is associated with the Information in the right hand bottom corner - i.e. the newspaper, the author, dates etc. This is obviously working perfectly.

Saving an article from the University of Manchester saves the document, but not the bibliographic data (i.e. the Information panel is empty). In addition the icon at the right hand side of the address bar is missing on this site, but not the NYT site.

Do you still want me to provide a debug history or any other information?
    Thanks
  • Saving an article from the University of Manchester saves the document, but not the bibliographic data
Saving how? If you don't save via the address bar icon, there won't be bibliographic data. Are you referring to the Create New Item from Current Page button, which saves web page snapshots without bibliographic data? (This is why it's essential to provide explicit steps to reproduce a problem—we can't just guess what you're doing.)

If you don't see the address bar icon on a page where you expect it, you need to provide an example URL.
  • Yes you are right. Sorry I haven't been explaining things clearly. I have been 'saving' items with the Create New Item from Current Page in order to send debug IDs because there is no longer an icon on the address bar visible. (I wasn't sure how else I could illustrate the problem)

The main issue is that I can no longer get bibliographic data from the University of Manchester electronic database (as the icon within the address bar is no longer there). I wish I could send you the URL of the Manchester Uni site, but it is password protected. The problem does seem to be site specific. Could there be a problem at the Manchester University end? I assumed it was a zotero problem as the problems seemed to start after I had downloaded the latest version of zotero.

Interestingly accessing abstracts on PubMed brings up the icon within the address bar.

What can I do that would give you the most helpful information?
  • I have been 'saving' items with the Create New Item from Current Page in order to send debug IDs because there is no longer an icon on the address bar visible.
I asked for a Debug ID for loading the page—that's all.
I wish I could send you the URL of the Manchester Uni site, but it is password protected.
You can still provide the URL, as long as the URL doesn't include a password or session id. (If loading the URL in another browser gets you to a login page, there's no harm in posting it.)
Interestingly accessing abstracts on PubMed brings up the icon within the address bar.
Different sites use different site translators. There's no connection between the icon on two unrelated sites.
  • The Debug ID is D1602066179. This is for loading an abstract from the University of manchester electronic database. Normally, when an abstract reference is clicked, the bibliographic data is recoggnised by the translators and the zotero icon appers in the address bar. I hope you can see this is not happening now.

    I hope this helps.
  • the corresponding webpage to the debig id is

    http://ovidsp.uk.ovid.com/sp-2.3.1/ovidweb.cgi?&S=KAOMPDLGAPHFHFJEFNELPDOFHEACAA00&Abstract=S.sh.14|1|1
  • 1) That's not the University of Manchester database—it's Ovid, which is a completely separate site.

    2) That version of Ovid uses a new URL format we haven't seen before (though I see the same format in the Ovid database I have access to, so it may have just been rolled out). I've just put out a new version of the Ovid translator that should fix this. Your copy of Zotero should auto-update within 24 hours, or you can update manually by clicking Update Now in the General pane of the Zotero prefs.
  • Fantastic -it is now working! Really appreciate your help, sorry for being a luddite
