    OK, I've updated the instructions, and they're a bit simpler, so you might want to give it one more shot. Again, you can ignore the last four steps. Just open Terminal, do the "cd" command from that page, and then try this:

    sqlite3 zotero.sqlite "PRAGMA integrity_check"
    Close Firefox before you run this.

    It said okay!

    When I opened Firefox, it asked me to run the repair tool again, though.

    Oh, well, that's not quite right—you need to copy the path for the 'zotero' directory itself, not the zotero.sqlite file. (What you just ran run there probably created an empty zotero.sqlite file in your home directory.)

    And just to be entirely sure, here—it looks like you're using a custom data directory. Are you sure Zotero is actually set to use that directory in the Advanced pane of the preferences? Are you sure you haven't been replacing zotero.sqlite in one directory while Zotero has been looking in another? Have you been using Show Data Directory from the Advanced pane to find your active data directory, or have you been just going to the directory you expect it to be using?

    I was doing the former. I must have misunderstood an early instruction that told me to make a copy of the directory, and I have been debugging the copy. The good news is that the program is installed now! I trashed the copy and moved the one from Show Data Directory and opened Firefox again, expecting to see the repair tool pop up again, but I got a registration screen instead.

    I've had the same problem as nbgarret. I don't get a zip file in the download, i.e. The new file is available here:
    https://api.zotero.org/utils/dbfix/files/----/zotero.sqlite.zip (3871KB)
    does not download a zip file - just zotero.sqlite. Replacing the file isn't getting me anywhere.

    Is there any way to NOT update everything and just keep what was working a few weeks ago? Or do I have to reinstall everything and start again?

    I have been trying to install Zotero 3.0 but I keep getting an error saying "Zotero could not be installed because Firefox cannot modify the needed file."
    I am running Windows 7 and Firefox 15.0.1
    I have checked the forums on this query but did not find anything that could help me.

    Any assistance will be much appreciated. JteB

    start a new thread - this is unrelated. It's also typically not a Zotero but a mozilla/Firefox issue, so do report it/ask there, too.

    Thanks Adam,

    I cleared the cache in Firefox, as suggested in the Zotero installation help notes, and within the Add-ons Manager of Firefox I was able to get it refreshed. This somehow, cleared the problem and I was able to install Zotero successfully.
