Download not proceeding.

The download does not "proceed smoothly" after I repair the database and re-save it. I followed the directions on the download repair, but when I restart Firefox, it asks me to do it all over again. I have done it 10 times or so. Any suggestions?

  • So what happens, exactly? It may appear to freeze for a while while the upgrade is proceeding.
  • You mean it tells you that your database is still corrupt? If so, it's highly likely that you're not replacing the database correctly.
  • Thanks for responding. It asks me to download the repair kit again and the process starts all over. It doesn't give me any other indication that my database is corrupt besides beginning the process all over when Firefox restarts. I have followed the directions for replacing my database several times: I upload my folder, copy the new file, replace the old file, and reopen Firefox. The only two slight differences between my sequence and the directions are that there is no corrupt file to erase--but I don't think there has to be--and that the new database files do not appear to be zipped when I copy them.

If you know of any way I can get any form of Zotero back, I will really appreciate it.

Please provide exact messages. I don't know what you mean by this.

What process? The standard upgrade process? You'll get that until you click through the wizard to upgrade the database.
and that the new database files do not appear to be zipped when I copy them.
I don't know what you mean by this either.

    1. Click red download. Click install now.

    Restart firefox to complete changes

    2. Zotero Upgrade Wizard says “This is a major upgrade. Be sure you have reviewed upgrade instructions. Press continue to upgrade now”

“Error, your database must be repaired. Load database repair tool. “

    3. Zotero says

    “Your database has been rebuilt.

The new file is available here:

    https://api.zotero.org/utils/dbfix/files/xxxxxxxx/zotero.sqlite.zip (3382KB)

After downloading this file, unzip it, close Firefox, and place the extracted zotero.sqlite in your Zotero data directory, replacing the existing file. If there is a zotero.sqlite.is.corrupt file in the directory, delete it. (Be sure you've made a backup of the entire 'zotero' folder before performing these steps!)

When you're done, start Firefox, and the upgrade process should proceed smoothly. Note that it may take a while to complete.

Please reference Upload ID 88888888 in any correspondence with the Zotero team regarding this repair. Do not post your Upload ID publicly.”

    • At this point I am not sure what my zotero data directory is, or where to find it. I have replaced the file in my zotero folder. I cannot even access zotero on the web browser; it has disappeared*

    4. When I restart Firefox, it tells me “You have installed a new version of Zotero. This is a major upgrade” etc. (see above). Then, when I click the installation wizard, it tells me again that the database needs to be repaired. In other words, the whole process starts all over.
  • I never get to a download wizard.

At this point I am not sure what my zotero data directory is, or where to find it. I have replaced the file in my zotero folder.
You had to have found your data directory to upload your database in the first place. A "directory" and a "folder" are the same thing.

    http://www.zotero.org/support/zotero_data
I have replaced the file in my zotero folder.
This is the part for which you have to tell us exactly what you're doing, because this is where you're doing something wrong.
  • I cannot even access zotero on the web browser; it has disappeared
I don't know what you mean by this.
  • I have replaced the file in my zotero folder.

"This is the part for which you have to tell us exactly what you're doing, because this is where you're doing something wrong. "

I open the new repaired file from the download manager, which takes me to my download folder where the repaired file is, unzipped. Then I drag that file to the zotero "directory" and drop it in. I am asked if I want to replace the file; I click replace.
  • I open the new repaired file from the download manager, which takes me to my download folder where the repaired file is, unzipped.
The downloaded file is a ZIP file. If you see some other file, that's not the file you just downloaded. You need to unzip the ZIP and copy the zotero.sqlite file within it.
  • Well, if you're double-clicking the zotero.sqlite.zip from the Download Manager it would unzip it for you, which might be what you mean.

What's the size and timestamp of the zotero.sqlite file? What's the size and timestamp of the zotero.sqlite file in your Zotero data directory?
  • But if you double-click from the Download Manager multiple times you'll get different unzipped files. Delete any zotero.sqlite files from your download folder, and then download the ZIP again and open it.
  • I am sorry. I deleted all the .sqlite files and then downloaded the zip again and opened it, and dragged it to my zotero directory. When I reopen firefox, I still do not get the wizard, only a prompt to load the repair tool--again.

Within the Zotero directory, there are 2 .bak.sqlite files in the zotero directory. Could these be causing problems?
  • The size of the zip file is 3.3 mb. The size of the file I upload to the repair tool is 8.6 mb. They are both from 3:16 pm.
  • What are the names, sizes, and timestamps of all zotero.sqlite files in your Zotero data directory?
  • 1. Zotero.sqlite.1.bak 8.6 MB 9/14/08 1:20pm. Modified 3/15 9:59 am

    2. Zotero.sqlite.bak 8.7 MB 9/14/08 1:20pm. Modified 3/15/2010 1:20pm

    3. Zotero.sqlite 8.6 MB 3/18/10 3:16pm.
  • Provide a Debug ID for the upgrade attempt using the "Enable after restart" option.

There's no need to continue using the DB Repair Tool. The database you're uploading is no longer corrupted.
  • I am not sure if I am understanding you correctly. The debug ID is D1973605692. Where do I provide this?

The DB Repair Tool pops up when I try to use the Upgrade Wizard. I cannot bypass the Repair Tool.
  • The DB Repair Tool pops up when I try to use the Upgrade Wizard. I cannot bypass the Repair Tool.
I'm not saying to bypass it—I'm saying there's no need to keep repeating the repair process. The problem is that either you're getting a spurious corruption message during upgrade or you're not properly replacing the file with the repaired version. No one else has reported this problem, so the former is fairly unlikely.

It looks like you're using OS X. If that's the case, follow the manual repair instructions (using the zotero.sqlite file from your data directory), except instead of the last four steps, use this command in Terminal:

    ./sqlite3 zotero.sqlite "PRAGMA integrity_check"
Does it say something other than "ok"?
  • I am afraid this is getting to a point beyond my abilities.

This is what I did and what it said...

Is there any way I can get any version of Zotero back, with or without my old data? I Have never had this kind of problem with a download before. I understand that no one else has reported this problem, but I have done everything I can to follow your instructions completely.
  • "The problem is that either you're getting a spurious corruption message during upgrade or you're not properly replacing the file with the repaired version."

How do I replace it properly with the repaired version, if it is not by dragging the repaired file to the Zotero directory?
  • Reinstall Zotero 1.0 from the home page. If you're using Firefox 3.6, revert to Firefox 3.5.

If you want to use Zotero 2.0, you're probably going to have to ask someone with some technical proficiency to help you with the upgrade and, if the problem persists, help perform the above Terminal commands, since you made a number of errors. (Don't worry—that's an advanced process that you shouldn't be expected to do.) But there's not much more we can do for you through this forum.

For what it's worth, the only possible reason one should have database corruption is due to bugs in Firefox 2.0, so this shouldn't be an ongoing problem once you eventually get past this step. As the repair page notes, all database corruption issues have been fixed in Firefox 3.0 and above.
  • How do I replace it properly with the repaired version, if it is not by dragging the repaired file to the Zotero directory?
That's how, but Zotero shouldn't display the corruption message if the repaired file is actually in place.

Out of curiosity, if you cancel the upgrade and click "Check database integrity" from the Advanced pane of the preferences (via Tools->Add-ons->Extensions->Zotero), what does it say?
  • Okay. Thank you for your help.
  • I will try that and let you know.

(I haven't gotten a corruption message except the one asking me to load the repair tool; would there be another one?)
  • It says:

    Failed:

Errors were found in the Zotero database!

You can use the database repair tool at http://zotero.org/utils/dbfix to attempt to correct these errors.
  • (I haven't gotten a corruption message except the one asking me to load the repair tool; would there be another one?)
No, not necessarily. But you can run the same database check that the upgrade wizard does at any time from the Advanced pane of the preferences, even in Zotero 1.0.
  • OK, you're going to need to ask someone to help you check the database manually using the SQLite client, then. It's not impossible that that could be a spurious error, but we've never seen that on OS X.

You might also want to verify your disk using Disk Utility.
  • Okay. I guess that's what I will have to do. Thanks again.
  • Actually, it looks like SQLite doesn't even offer an OS X version for download anymore (sqlite-analyzer is something else), so those steps will need to be updated anyway.
