"Zotero Integration Error" with OpenOffice

Report ID: 103292201

I'm getting an error when I try to insert citations into OpenOffice Writer documents. In MS Word, the plugin works fine on the same system. In Openoffice Writer, I get the following message:

"Firefox could not load the component required to communicate with your word processor. Please ensure that the appropriate Firefox extension is installed and try again."

My specs:
Windows XP
Openoffice.org 3.1.1
Zotero 2.0.1
Zotero Openoffice Intergration 3.0.a7
Zotero WinWord Integration 3.0a3
Firefox 3.5.7
Java Version 1.6.0_11 from Sun Microsystems Inc. (can't be upgrade --- I'm a non-admin user)

I've uninstalled and reinstalled multiple times, tried removing the WinWord plugin and then reinstalling Openoffice plugin, and the "addCitation" windows shell command suggested in another thread (http://forums.zotero.org/discussion/9569/openoffice-cant-communicate/) by Simon. I've also tried setting the executable and URE jar directories. These are set to:

Java:
file:///C:/Program%20Files/OpenOffice.org%203/URE/java/
Executable:
file:///C:/Program%20Files/OpenOffice.org%203/program/

I've done all of these steps to no avail, despite these working for others. I'm not really exhibiting any new symptoms compared to others on the forum, except perhaps the fact that it does work in MS Word.

One other detail: When I first installed, the old version of the plugin was not automatically uninstalled from Openoffice. I got the "incompatible plugin" error at first. I then manually (via openoffice's extension manager) uninstalled both the old and new plugin and reinstalled via firefox. That is when I started getting the current error.

Any suggestions?
  • Assuming those paths are correct, your best bet, if possible, is probably to ask the admin to upgrade OpenOffice, Java, and Firefox.

The actual error you're getting is this:
plugin exception: java.security.AccessControlException: access denied (java.lang.RuntimePermission createClassLoader)
I don't recall seeing this before, so it may be due to permissions on your system, or that might just be a side effect of another problem.
  • Thanks for your response. I've thought of two other points that may or may not be related:

    1. I use a non-standard location for my Zotero Data Directory. It is on a networked drive so that it would survive if the admins decided to re-image this machine.

    2. The old versions of Zotero and the Openoffice plugin worked fine on this machine with the same software stack.

Do you think my best option is still to try to get upgrades done?
  • Off the top of my head, I would guess that whoever administers your machine has locked down Java to the point that Zotero OpenOffice Integration can't function. I'm not sure where the configuration option to do this is, but if I were you, I would ask your admins about any special security restrictions they've imposed upon the use of Java.
