Can't add books to my library by clicking on icon

I just upgraded to Zotero 2.0.1. Before I did this, I was able to add books with no problem from the Williamsburg Research Partners Libraries wesite with no problem. Now I can't. I can add books from Amazon, and I can add books manually, but not from that library website.

  • Works fine for me. Report ID?
  • Here's the latest Report ID:
    1697790218

I have also gotten the "slow scripts" message on starting Firefox and have already had to close and open Firefox once this morning. I was able to add one book from the Swem Library website and one from Amazon before the "click to add" function shut down again.

What's happening and how do I fix it? I don't know all of the technical terms, nor have I ever gone into my Zotero directory, so I'd need step-by-step directions.

    Thanks.
  • I should add that I tried adding books from WorldCat, and that didn't work either. I think it's something with my own laptop, so any help you can give me would be great.
  • I have also noticed that, when the "one click" fails to add the book and I then add it manually, the information seems already to be there (i.e., appears as a choice in a drop-down box), even though the author is new to the library. So I think the information is getting from the source to Zotero, but something is blocking filling in the boxes automatically.
  • On the other hand, web pages translate just fine--no problem at all adding them to my library.
  • 1) Check your database integrity in the Advanced pane of the Zotero preferences.

    2) Is that Report ID from immediately after you get the error and before restarting Firefox?
I have also gotten the "slow scripts" message on starting Firefox and have already had to close and open Firefox once this morning.
    3) We'll need the exact message, including file and line number. And what do you mean by "have already had to close and open Firefox"?
  • 1) I checked my database integrity, and there are no errors.
    2) I left what I was doing for about 90 minutes, shut down Firefox (but left the computer running), came back, started Firefox (no problems, no messages), opened Zotero again, made a "Test" library, added 3 items with no problem, and now cannot enter a 4th (same source--William & Mary library).

    3) I have been able to log in and the sync page accepts my e-mail address and password, but, in the right-hand pane on the entry screen, there's a little red exclamation point, and when I click on it the message is "The Zotero sync server did not accept your username and password. Please check that you have entered your zotero.org login information correctly in the Zotero sync preferences."

    4) When I go to the "gears" icon and go to the "Report Errors," everything that is listed starts with "JavaScript error." There are a lot of them, and I have no way to "cut and paste" (I tried right-clicking and it didn't work). I did click on "next" to send the errors off to you.

Hope this is more useful. Thanks--even though I had to manually add most of the books in the particular library I was using, when I was done I was able to get the bibliography I needed, in the right format, in a Word document. Zotero is great!

When I follow the instructions and try to re-sync, the little red dot remains.

I did click on "next" to send the errors off to you.
When you do this, you need to copy the Report ID and post it here. Otherwise, the developers don't know which error report is yours.

edit: I should read more carefully! Someone else had not quite understood this in a different thread, but you understand and have already posted it. Sorry!
  • Sorry--I meant to do that.

    Here it is: 921478568
  • OK, but again: are you sending in the error (and providing the Report ID) after trying to save and before restarting Firefox? There are no errors in there that indicate that you're having problems saving from websites (and no Zotero errors at all).

And I think it'd probably help if we backed up and you explained exactly what the problem is, since at this point I don't really have any idea what the problem is you're reporting. Are you receiving a "Could Not Save" error? Note that a sync error has nothing to do with saving from websites.

    Start here: http://www.zotero.org/support/reporting_bugs
    3) I have been able to log in and the sync page accepts my e-mail address and password, but, in the right-hand pane on the entry screen, there's a little red exclamation point, and when I click on it the message is "The Zotero sync server did not accept your username and password. Please check that you have entered your zotero.org login information correctly in the Zotero sync preferences."
Again, this isn't related to a save error, if that's what you're referring to. But if you care about syncing, then yes, check your login information in the Sync pane of the preferences.
  • I'm sorry for all the confusion--all I want to know is why, after being able to click on the little blue book icon in the web page's address line for 2 or 3 different books to add them to a particular library and having it work with no problem, it suddenly doesn't work any more and I have to add everything manually. It's happened with Swem Library, Amazon and WorldCat: I can add 2-3 books/sources with no problem, and then the "click on the blue book" function doesn't work any more.

I'm going to shut down my computer completely now and then boot up again, start Firefox again, and then Zotero, and see what happens.
  • Yes, but what does "doesn't work any more" mean?
  • When the address bar icon stops working, do you see any message appear in the lower right corner of your screen? Have you tried disabling your other addons to see if there is something interfering with Zotero's operation?
  • I shut down my computer; I turned it on. I started Firefox; NY Times is my homepage. I got the following message:
"A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete.

    Script: chrome://zotero/content/xpcom/translate.js:244"

I have Registry Mechanic, but it is turned off. I've got Xmarks, Diigo, Upromise, Norton IPS and Norton Toolbar as add-ons.

What I mean by "doesn't work any more" is that I click on the blue book in the address line and **no information** gets added to my Zotero library automatically. I can add the book's title manually and when I go to the Author line, the information is there in the drop-down boxes (same with Place and Publisher). But there is no little "pop up" box in the lower right corner of my screen telling me that the book has been added.

There is no such problem in adding a webpage. I click the little webpage icon, and it's added to the library immediately.

Thanks for your responding to my requests--I really appreciate it (and especially when you can't actually sit at a user's computer!)
  • Provide a Debug ID of a save attempt that doesn't work. (If it takes a few tries to get one not to work, clear the output in between.)
  • The Debug ID is D1631360493.

    Thanks.
  • Disable your other Firefox extensions and try again. Note that "Norton Internet Security — Identity Safe feature" is listed on the known issues page, and there may be other issues with Norton (or there may be problems with other extensions of yours).

It appears to be saving fine, but an error (possibly caused by a conflict with another extension) is preventing UI updates. Are you sure the items aren't there after you restart Firefox?
  • Thanks--I will disable the Firefox extensions and try again and report back.

And I just checked, after restarting Firefox--the items are not there.
  • You checked in My Library (as opposed to a particular collection)? If there's a problem saving, the items might not be added to the active collection.

Switch to My Library and sort by Date Added.

Based on that output and the auto-complete behavior you report, the items are there.
  • I disabled all of the Firefox extensions, plus the Norton--Identity Safe feature. With none of the extensions, everything worked fine, and as I added them back in (restarting Firefox each time), I can add books with no problem. The only thing I've not reenabled is the Norton, based on the "known issues" page.

I did check in My Library, and they are all there--they just didn't show up in the active collection I was working with. And now that I know this, I know I could have copied a particular title from "My Library" to the working collection. But turning off the Norton seems to have done the trick.

Thanks again--I really appreciate your patience in working through this issue.
