Instructions for syncing for a non-techno geek

Dear all,

I am a big fan of Zotero. But I have to admit that I dont understand anything about the sync process explained on the page. I just started a new job and have a new desktop. I have always worked with Zotero on my laptop and now I need to have access to my biblio from the desktop too.

Could someone explain to me clearly which steps I have to follow, what I have to download on the desktop etc.? Clicking on the sync icone of the Preferences Tab never lead me to anything but always to the previous page...

Thank you,

S.D.

What exactly don't you understand on that page?
  • Hi Dan,

I understand whats on that page. But I cant get to the page where I have to "enter your login information in the Zotero Sync Server section".

If I click on the link for the Preferences Tab, I get on the image. If I click on the Sync (typed in red) link, I get to the same infos but nowhere to login... So I always get back to the same page...

    Thanks a lot,

    S.D.
  • If you are thinking about this in terms of "pages" you're probably doing something wrong.
The "preferences" are in Zotero. You cannot get to them by following a link.
You get to them by clicking on preferences in the Gears menu in Zotero
    http://www.zotero.org/support/preferences
Do you get to this preferences window?
  • Yep,

What I see is the following. But when I click on Sync, I dont get to a place where I can login... Thats what I dont understand...

    Thanks again,

    S.D.

Many of Zotero's features can be customized via the Zotero preferences. To access the Zotero preference window, either open the Zotero pane, click the actions menu button (the 'gear' icon, see screenshot) at the top of the left column and select the “Preferences…” option, or alternatively, select “Add-ons” in the Tools menu of Firefox, then select Zotero and click the “Options” button.
    Preference Tabs

The preferences in the preference window are divided over the following tabs:

    *
General - adjust appearance and set miscellaneous features.
    *
Sync - set your username, password and (if desired) WebDAV server for syncing.
    *
Search - turn full-text indexing of pdf-file on and off and see relevant statistics.
    *
Export - specify how bibliographies are generated
    *
Styles - add and remove citation styles
    *
Proxies - configure proxy server settings
    *
Shortcut Keys - configure keyboard shortcuts for Zotero
    *
Advanced - storage location, database integrity, and character encoding
  • Ok guys, I got the Preferences window and the login box. Now I am working on my new desktop, could you guys tell me if I sync automatically? Do I sync from Zotero or from WebDAV?

I guess I log in with the same name and password as to get in the forum rigt?

    S.D.
  • mckendry - please start a new thread, this isn't related.
sebastien - you sync from Zotero - it's automatic when you have that option checked.
  • Adam,

If I check the box to Sync automatically and I select Sync from Zotero and nothing happens, what do I have to do?

Just make sure you click the "OK" button at the bottom of the preferences window after you enter your login info and check the "sync automatically" box. Then it will automatically synchronize with your online library whenever a change is made. If you want to transfer the stuff from Zotero on your labtop, you have to go through the same setup to sync the laptop as well. That will put all your old references into your online library. After syncing the laptop, when you sync the new computer again, it will get all the old data that will then be in your online library.

Edit: And if I misunderstood, and you have been syncing your old laptop, then make sure you have them both set up with the same account (same login name and password).
