attachments

Hi,

I've just discovered Zotero and read the quick-start-guide. I have a specific question about files that are attached. For example, for a word document on which I'm working, when I'll open it with Zotero, will I have the old version (when I have attached the file) or will I have the version updated (when I saved changes after attaching the file)?
In other words, do Zotero include the file's address or does it consider something else?

Thanks
  • It depends if you use "Link to File" or "Store Copy of File" when creating the attachment. If you use Link to File, there's only one file, stored wherever it is on your hard drive, and opening it from Zotero just launches that file. If you use Store Copy of File, Zotero makes a copy of the file and imports it into its own storage folder, so you might want to remove the original file if you then open the imported one from within Zotero and make edits (and be sure to back up your Zotero data directory frequently).
  • Hi Dan, I normally drag and drop files when I'm adding attachments. I believe this always stores a copy. Is there a way / preference setting so that drag and drop links rather than stores the file?
    Thanks,
    Jon.

No, but I suppose there should be. Ticket created, thanks.
