File sync error ID:1040264657

Hi, I got this error message after I've performed my first sync. In prefernces 'sync attachment files in my library using Zotero' was checked too. I don't know what does this mean, and what should I do next.
Message over the 'sync' button says that last sync was performed 44 minutes ago.
I only assume that data sync was ok, but something went wrong with the file sync. Could it be because of the storage file size? If yes, can I select the attachment files I want to have synced within the 100Mb limit? Thanks
  • File upload failed. Please try again.
    Just try again.

  • I did try gain, several times. The last error report ID was 467715837. And then
    974970826 :).
Can we make this go away?
  • 1) You're using an old version of Zotero. Upgrade to 2.0.

    2) You're no longer receiving the same error. Restart Firefox and try again.

    1) I never had Zotero 1. I am using 2.0rc5 on Firefox 3.5.8 (Vista 64). I'm reluctant to upgrade either one, don't have the time now to deal with potential hickups.
    2) I restarted Firefox, activated sync manually, and there it is again: File upload failed, please try again. ID: 927679014. Tried again, ID: 102636500. Restarted my laptop, tried again, with the same result, ID: 1934180680.

I only started syncing because I'm in the middle of a work and need to know that I have done everything I could not to lose my data. Now this red warning sign makes me wonder...

    What next?
    Thanks for the effort, Dan

The red warning sign does go away when I restart Firefox, but I have no way of knowing whether my files are actually synchronized.

  • sozot - if you're not willing to upgrade your software Dan can't help you - how else would he "make things go away"?
Changes between rc5 and final are minimal, most of them concerning sync:
    http://www.zotero.org/support/changelog
problems are extremely unlikely to result from an update.
  • Thanks Adam, your answer clarifies it - it was a misunderstanding - I assumed anything after 2.0b7 was supposed to work fine, as referred to in Zotero File Storage For Your Library (1. To configure your library for storage you will need to first upgrade to Zotero 2.0b7 or later).

Following your reassurance, I upgraded to 2.0 and restarted Firefox.

I regret to say that again I got the same error message, ID: 4339398.

I really appreciate your help, thanks again.
  • Provide a Debug ID for a sync attempt that generates the error.
  • The Debug ID is D2012104634.

That debug output doesn't include file syncing. Again, we need debug output that includes the error.
  • Than I guess I have to wait till the sync attempt is finalized, and then click “Submit to Zotero Server”? Previously i only initiated sync, and immediately submitted (sync is still n progress). i'll do it again now.

Clear debug output, sync, wait until you actually get the error, and then submit the output.
  • The Debug ID is D1214160013.

  • Yeah, so this is just an underlying error from Amazon S3, which is the back-end for Zotero File Storage. The error message doesn't give any indication as to why it occurs, so as far as we know these are just intermittent failures. This is why the error message from Zotero simply says to try again.

Note that in your sync, 50 or so files went through before you received the error, so it is i fact progressing. Zotero should probably retry the upload automatically when it receives an error from Amazon, but, in the meantime, just keep syncing, and you'll eventually make it through all your files.
