One of many recent problems, this time identified (by my letting it play through) as an automatic sync failure.

Commonly Firefox will spike to 50% or more CPU and just freeze.

    An automatic sync resulted in a conflict that requires manual intervention.

    Click the sync icon to sync manually.
    That's not an error message. Just click the sync icon, as the message says.

    I've just tried that, but after a minute or so Firefox just froze altogether -- no error message, but no success.

    And what about the other CPU run-ups and freezes? That doesn't seem to happen except when Zotero is activated. But it just about always does, sooner or later, when Zotero is. Not functional.

    It's quite likely doing a large initial sync. Let it complete.
