Zotero MacWord Integration Error

Zotero Word Integration Error

I am getting the following error message when trying to install the MacWord plugin:

“This version of Zotero MacWord Integration requires PythonExt 2.5 or later to run. Please download the latest version of PythonExt from zotero.org.”

FF version 3.6
Zotero v2.0rc2

Mac Word plugin 3.0a7
Word for Mac 2008 v12.2.3

When attempting to download and install the latest Python Extension, I get the following error:

Zotero WinWord Integration" could not be installed because it is not compatible with your Firefox build type (Darwin_x86-gcc3). Please contact the author of this item about the problem.

I also downloaded PyXPCOM Mozilla 1.9.2 (Firefox 3.6, XULRunner 1.9.2) - Alpha release from Mozdev.org and it did not seem to fix the problem.

Any help would be appreciated.

  • It would appear you're trying to install the Word for Windows plugin.
  • It's possible that I may have accidentally tried to install the Windows plugin earlier, but now when I try to install the MacWord plugin I still get the error:

“This version of Zotero MacWord Integration requires PythonExt 2.5 or later to run. Please download the latest version of PythonExt from zotero.org.”

I believe I have updated the PythonExt so I don't know what else to try. Do I need to unistall the incorrect Windows version if I mistakenly tried to install it earlier?
  • This information may also be helpful-

The toolbar appears in Word but when I try to use it I get this error:

Firefox could not load the component required to communicate with your word processor. Please ensure that the appropriate Firefox extension is installed, then try again.
  • I also get “This version of Zotero MacWord Integration requires PythonExt 2.5 or later to run. Please download the latest version of PythonExt from zotero.org.”

but without the toolbar in word

    Any help would be appreciated.
  • It's a little hard to find if you are using the 2008 verison:
    http://www.zotero.org/support/kb/no_toolbar_in_word_2008_plugin
  • thank you noellejm, but I am using word 2004
  • You need two Firefox extensions, the MacWord Integration Plugin extension and the PythonExt extension, installed into Firefox (and listed in Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions).

Both of these can be found on the installation page. Some users have had trouble in Firefox 3.6 with the zotero.org version of PythonExt, in which case you can try the official alpha version for 3.6, which we haven't tested but I believe some users have gotten to work. If you're still having trouble with PythonExt in Firefox 3.6, you can always revert to Firefox 3.5 for the time being.
  • I am having the exact same problem as noellejm. The official alpha PythonExt for 3.6 isn't working for me. How do I revert to using Firefox 3.5??
  • Can you elaborate on "isn't working"?
  • Well, I have gone to the link you posted for the official alpha version for 3.6 and clicked to install it. I already have installed (1) Zotero 2.0rc2 and (2) Zotero MacWord Integration 3.0a7. (I am running Mac OS, Word 2008). The alpha PythonExt doesn't show up in Tools-Add ons-Extensions (not sure if it should). When I restart Firefox, it says “This version of Zotero MacWord Integration requires PythonExt 2.5 or later to run. Please download the latest version of PythonExt from zotero.org.” I thought that I DID install the latest version...
  • OK, this is a problem other people have had as well with 3.6, and apparently the alpha version of PythonExt doesn't fix it. After installing the plugin and restarting Firefox, can you provide a Report ID?
  • Here's the Report ID: 1625472370
  • That's immediately after the first restart after an attempted installation, before another restart?
  • Correct. After the attempted installation, it prompted me to "Restart Firefox." After doing so, I immediately clicked the "Report ID" on Zotero.

Can you clear the Firefox extension cache files as well as compreg.dat and xpti.dat from your Firefox profile directory, restart Firefox, make sure PythonExt is missing, attempt to reinstall it again, restart Firefox, and generate another Report ID?

There might not be anything different in there, but it's going to be hard to figure out what's causing this without more information, since we can't reproduce it ourselves.
  • If other people experiencing this (PythonExt missing from Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions after an attempted install) could try the same thing, that would be helpful.
  • Hi everyone,

I am using Firefox 3.6 and Zotero 2.0rc2. I have followed the instructions provided by Dan but for some reason, I am still unable to cite with my Zotero tool bar. Although I have the toolbar loaded in MS Word (I have a MAC and am using MAC OSX), the toolbar does not recognize my action. In other words, I click on "insert citation" but nothing happens. Any advice would be very helpful.

  • Carnaldo, have you tried this?
  • I have, and now it says, "This version of Zotero MacWord Integration requires PythonExt 2.5 or later to run. I follow the instructions to download PythonExt 2.5 but the issue still remains.

  • OK - carefully re-read the information in this thread concerning that (new and prob. unrelated) problem, follow all the suggested steps and provide an error report ID as requested by Dan.
  • Same thing as # Kristen Zion, only difference is I am using Word 2004

I already have installed (1) Zotero 2.0rc2 and (2) Zotero MacWord Integration 3.0a7. (I am running Mac OS, Word 2004). The alpha PythonExt doesn't show up in Tools-Add ons-Extensions. When I restart Firefox, it says “This version of Zotero MacWord Integration requires PythonExt 2.5 or later to run. Please download the latest version of PythonExt from zotero.org.” I thought that I DID install the latest version...

Report ID: 1998663653 after first restart

Then I cleared the Firefox extension cache files as well as compreg.dat and xpti.dat from my Firefox profile directory. I restarted Firefox and PythonExt is missing.

    Report ID: 768058183

    Any other things to try?
  • Thanks for your help. Hopefully I can get it worked out.
  • Actually, how about a Report ID after installing PythonExt but before restarting Firefox to complete the installation? There don't seem to be any relevant errors after restarting, but clearly Firefox 3.6 and PythonExt aren't getting along.

(Again, just to reiterate: the message about PythonExt from Zotero is irrelevant, as it's the expected behavior if PythonExt isn't available. The problem is that PythonExt isn't getting installed, which can be ascertained by looking in Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions after restarting.)
  • Report ID: 677878506

    (after installing alpha PythonExt)
  • Same problem. alpha PythonExt disappears after restart. Here's my Report ID before restarting Firefox.

    Report ID: 983705242

I run Mac OS 10.6.2, Zotero 2.0rc2, and Macworld Integration 3.0a7.
