searched web-pages are automatically indexed in Zotero. So a regular search in all fields includes webpage text.
If you have the webpage displayed you can just use FF search function using ctrl+f
Sounds simple enough, so I must be doing something wrong.
On a webpage I clicked "Create new item from webpage", which saves it into my list. But a search for a word on the page doesn't return the page.
(I need to be able to find words on webpages when I don't have the webpage displayed.)
I'm new to Z and haven't been able to find this answer in the documentation. Could you tell me exactly what steps it takes? Thanks a lot.
You do have a snapshot of the webpage attached to the item Zotero creates, right?
when you select the snapshot of the webpage, on the right hand panel you should see a line that says "indexed: yes" and a round green double-arrow next to it. Can you confirm that?
If you use advanced search (the magnifying glass) and search through "attachment content" does that work?
Just to make sure - you are certain that the word you're looking for is included in the webpage as text and not as a graphic - i.e. when you display the webpage and search for it in Firefox you do find the word, correct?
Also, I think the current Zotero version may have a bug that's affecting search within attachments under some circumstances - I'm not sure that this is the issue here, but in any case the bug is fixed and the fix will be included in the next released update, so if all else fails wait for that.
Edit: just wanted to add - in general this should work without any problems and you're doing everything right.

yes when I double click on the main entry, an indented entry with the same name comes up below it with the snapshot icon

This may be where the problem is. When I select it, the line says "Indexed: No"
OK. So that's the problem then. What happens when you click on the green round arrow next to "Indexed: No"?
Could you give a URL for one of the websites so that I can have a look?
It doesn't have a green arrow next to "indexed:no". However, I guess I should've tried more webpages before asking about this, because it seems the only one that has "indexed:no" is drudgereport.com. When I create new items from other webpages, they all say "indexed:yes". (/edit: and searches work)
I had thought that I tried some other pages yesterday with the same unsuccessful search results, but if I did, I can't remember which ones.
indexing the front page of drudgereport works for me. I don't know what's going wrong there - hard to tell. I've never seen the green arrow missing, I don't know in what cases that happens - almost looks like something went wrong with the snapshot (but on Drudgereport of all pages? That has gotta be the simplest site on the internet).

I figured I'd stop here and see what you think.

Thanks a lot for your help.
