Openoffice, Zotero, Firefox, Java all new, won't work

I downloaded the newest version of Openoffice yesterday. I updated Zotero, Firefox, AND Java today with all of the latest versions. I cannot get Zotero to work in my Openoffice file. When I click on any of the Zotero buttons, nothing happenes. NOTHING!! I've been using Zotero for over a year on my primary laptop, and since June 2009 on my mini. It is on my mini that I am having problems. My 9 year old version of Microsoft Office won't let me use it anymore (cause they want me to buy the new version, which I hate) so I am switching to Openoffice. I've tried restarting all programs multiple times, and still nothing. I've spent the last hour on this, when I really needed to spend that hour on my thesis work. Anyone who can help, please let me know.
  • You need to provide a lot more information than that, starting with the versions of each piece of software you're referring to.

Be sure you've also reviewed the troubleshooting page.
  • I vaguely recall there's been discussion of this previously. Did you try a search of the forum?
  • I've got:
Windows XP (comes standard on Dell Inspiron minis)
    Openoffice v.3.1
    Zotero v. 2.0rc2
    Zotero Openoffice Integration 3.0a6
    Firefox 3.36

I've uninstalled and reinstalled both the Zotero Plug-in and Openoffice. However, when I try to insert a citation or bibliography, nothing happens. When I try to refresh Zotero in Openoffice, I get the error message of plugin 1.0b4 not being compatible with 2.0rc2. But I'm not running 1.0b4 plug in, my plugin menu through Firefox says I've got 3.0a6.

I looked through the other discussions, but I'm still stymied. Anyone have any ideas?
  • hmm - did you ever install the 1.0b4 plugin? It has to come from some place and it looks like it wasn't properly removed..
Also, really, Firefox 3.36? That has to be a typo, no? If not, any reason you're not upgrading, at least to 3.57?
  • Sorry, was eating and looked at the wrong numbers. I've got 3.6 (upgraded today).

The only thing I can think of is that I accidentally got the wrong plug in the first time, but I've done all the un/reinstalling since then, and I can't find a trace of the 1.0b4 plugin, except when I try to use Zotero in Openoffice.
  • When I try to refresh Zotero in Openoffice, I get the error message of plugin 1.0b4 not being compatible with 2.0rc2.

  • I've tried that, 4 times actually. I've got the right plugin, it just isn't talking to Openoffice to let it know to use the new plugin instead of the old.
  • there are a lot of other suggestions than re-installling when you follow that link - which of them have you tried?
  • I've got the right plugin
No, you don't. You still have the old one in OpenOffice, and, while that shouldn't happen, when it does, you need to manually uninstall the old one, as the link I provided explains.
  • I've tried to follow the instructions on in the link above (3 times yesterday) and the file pathways aren't there on my computer. They just aren't there. So I tried searching my entire harddisk for anything to do with "zotero" and got zip. I've manually looked for Zotero on my computer, looked in every folder in the Mozilla Firefox Program File, and the Openoffice Program File, and still nothing.
  • What file paths? The section I linked says to remove the extension from OpenOffice via the OO Extension Manager.
  • alright, I removed the extension, closed openoffice, reinstalled the correct plugin, and now openoffice won't recognize it at all (not in the extension manager). i even restarted my computer to see if that would help (longshot). it didn't.
  • ok - have you tried this as a next step?

sorry this is so piecemeal - the more you describe what you're doing and what exactly happens the easier it is to troubleshoot.
  • Thank you adamsmith!! It finally works, and I can get on with my work.
