getting java to work in Firefox 3.6 on Ubuntu Karmic Koala

This is more of a question for the Ubuntu forums but I know there are a few people out there who might be able to help.
Apparently you need the latest jre1.6.0_18 for java to work in Firefox 3.6 which I need to get the openoffice plugin to work.
I've followed the instructions from here:

http://sites.google.com/site/easylinuxtipsproject/java

but when I try the java tester

http://www.javatester.org/version.html

or when I check about:plugins there's nothing there for java.

grump.

Any help gratefully received.
Thanks, Jon.
  • Firefox 3.6 needs a different Java plugin, might that be the source of the problem? There is a jumble of cookbook instructions here; all that was needed for me was to create a symlink to the right file from the FF 3.6 plugins directory.
  • Hi - yes I know it needs a different Java plugin - that's why I installed the jre1.6.0_18

The last thing I tried was to symlink
    ln -s /opt/java/32/jre1.6.0_18/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so ~/.mozilla/plugins/

    So if
    ~/.mozilla/plugins/
isn't the right folder where is?
    I've got a symlink in
    /usr/lib/firefox-3.6/plugins
    and
    /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins

I'm pretty sure that java is installed OK as I can run the Java Control Panel...
So, yes it's almost certainly a missing symlink but if it's not in any of the three folders above, where should it be and how stupid am I going to feel when this gets sorted?

    Sigh.

    Thanks,
    Jon.

    Ah hah!

So I was symlinking the wrong file! So I feel a bit stupid, but then again was just following orders / instructions.

So thank you fbennett for solving this one, now have glorious pink rectangle of java but haven't yet checked that the OOo plugin works, but this is a major step forwards,

    Thanks again
    Jon.

Quick follow up: yes the OOo plugin works! Very happy & relieved.
