prompt to update citation keys

The prompt that's appearing about migrating citation keys is very confusing. First of all, it seems there's a bug on the linux app where when you click the options, nothing happens. It's unclear whether they're supposed to be check boxes (i.e. select multiple or none) or radio buttons (i.e. select one).

The distinction between "Migrate all Better BibTex citation keys to Zotero citation keys" vs. Discard all BetterBibTeX citation keys" is unclear. If I'm migrating better bibtex keys to zotero citation keys, wouldn't that imply that the original better bibtex citation keys are discarded?

Similarly, what's the relationship between "Overwrite existing key in library" and "Discard better bibtex key" - if I'm overwriting the existing better bibtex keys, doesn't that mean they're effectively discarded? Also, what's the difference between this question and the first question?

  • Note that this is a BBT dialog. You'll want to make absolutely sure that you have the latest version of BBT because there were some bugs in older versions.

I can tell you what the setting mean, but for any actual support (including if the linux bug persises) you'll want to go to the BBT github where the developer does direct (and prompt) support.

    First question:
    - migrate writes all BBT keys to the new Zotero citekey field
    - discard leaves that field entirely empty; items now have no stable citekey (a dynamic one is always generated on export and obviously you can fill in the citekey field both manually and later again with BBT)

Second question asks about the situation (e.g. for a preprint item which has had a Zotero Citation Key field for some time) where you have both something in the Zotero Citation Key field and in the BBT citation key.
    - First option writes the BBT key to the Citation Key field, overwriting whatever was there before
    - Second option leaves whatever is in the Citation Key field there, hence 'discards' the BBT key.

If you want to have things with existing BBT keys continue working smoothly, you want to check the first option for both.

The last question should be self explanatory and I'd imagine preferences there change: Update option enforces a more consistent representation of metadata in citekeys, keep unchanged keeps citekeys more reliably stable.
  • Did not realize it was a BBT dialog and not a Zotero dialog - thank you for the guidance.
