Report ID: 35786553

I am getting a series of sync error messages from this report ID. How do I clear the errors so that I can restore syncing from my desktop to the web library?

You've used some plugin that created invalid item keys. You'll need to report this to the plugin developer, who will need to help you fix them.

(You can paste that item key into the search bar in All Fields & Tags mode in one of your group libraries to see the item in question. There are a bunch of them.)

Thank you- I'm not seeing the item key pop up in any of my libraries, however. I just removed the Chrome plug-in in case that was causing the issue, but it doesn't seem like it changed anything.

This is the full list of errors that I get:

    [errors removed — D.S.]

    appName => Zotero, version => 7.0.32 (ARM64), os => macOS 26.3.1, locale => en-US, extensions => Notero (1.2.2, extension)

This is a Zotero plugin (either Notero or something else you had installed previously), not something that came from us.

(You don't need to post the error log. That's the point of the Report ID.)

From the server logs, it looks like these are PDF attachments created on March 4th.

You should see them if you paste some of the item keys into the search bar, but you have to be in All Fields & Tags mode and you have to be in the root of the group library you're an owner of.

They all have invalid item keys that Zotero itself does not create. The attachments will need to be deleted (including from the trash) and recreated with correct keys. We can't tell you how this happened — you'd have to think about what you were doing/using on March 4th.
  • Thanks- but I am in All Fields & Tags, and I still get nothing in Zotero when I search for the item ID. I do see the folders with that ID when I search in my 'storage' folder- would you recommend deleting those folders with the underlying PDFs, as a possible way to clear the error? I'm just not sure what else to do.

Then you're likely not in the right library. These are in the group library you own.

Just deleting the attachments on disk won't do anything.

Here's a whole bunch from your most recent sync attempt:

    2D0V59EM
    5B08TTCN
    ZBTW5OZL
    SCJ5M6OP
    OJOCPOLW

Again, though, these would've had to have been created by some plugin you used. I'm not seeing anything in Notero that would've done this. Were you using some other plugin earlier this month?

You can also check the trash in the group library. The attachments weren't directly deleted, but the parent items might have been.

In that case, you would just need to empty the trash (e.g., if you used something that created these and then deleted them all).
  • I deleted the trash in the online version, and I am definitely in the right library with the right selection, and nothing comes up. I am going through and finding the item in my storage and then deleting that PDF in Zotero, to see if that works, and then emptying the trash. Not sure what else to do but do this manually. If anyone has suggestions, all ears!
  • dstillman Zotero Team
You would have to delete the trash locally. These items don't exist online, because they literally can't be uploaded.
  • Yes, I had done that originally and am continuing to delete it as I go.

Can you provide some screenshots that show how you're trying the searches with the different keys that I provided above? You can post here or send to support@zotero.org with a link to this thread if you don't want to share the group name.
  • dstillman Zotero Team
You also didn't answer my question about plugins.

The parent items (HYLLV8LD, GISU4N42, BTSEQHIM, APSQLNHZ…) are all older. (You can also search for those.) So you specifically did something to create these attachments to existing items on March 4th.

I can't keep the drop-down open when doing the screenshot, but I am in the "All Fields and Tags" setting.

I have Zotero in GoogleDocs and Word, and I use Notero, but that's all I have connected.

When you say the parent items are 'older', can you clarify what you mean? I don't recall doing anything in particular on March 4th so I'm just at a loss about what might have happened.

This is a library I use with students, so I just need to fix the sync to the online version so that they can keep accessing updated material.

    Thanks for your help.

Oh, sorry, it wouldn't show up because it's not a valid item key, and we check for a valid item key in the search. Search for the parent keys I gave above instead, and look at all the attachments. You'll need to try to remember what you did to add all of these.

Meaning they're not from March 4th. E.g., they're from previous years. You just added attachments on the 4th.

You can look at, say, 3ARQM89H or 56H2G9E8 for other attachments you created at the exact same time that did have valid keys and so were uploaded.
  • Hello, I just submitted a new Report ID: 769472717. Now I've got a bunch of new issues that I see in the report, so it would be great to know if what is showing up is a set of new issues that I'm creating, or something else?
