Capitalization of words beginning with the letter 'I' in notes

Like most word processors, Zotero's notes function automatically capitalises the letter 'i' if it is a standalone word. The problem is that my version of Zotero also autocapitalises every word beginning with the letter 'i', resulting in sentences like 'This Is an Inconvenient way to write and Irritating to read.'

Anyone know how I can fix this?

    This certainly isn't normal behavior.

Can you provide a Report ID?

Can you reproduce that in Troubleshooting Mode (Help → "Restart in Troubleshooting Mode…”), which temporarily disables all plugins?
  • Thanks

Can you make a screen recording of this happening and send it to support@zotero.org with a link to this thread?

Can you also check whether it happens in a search field in the Advanced Search window?
  • I posted a similar comment here:

    https://forums.zotero.org/discussion/130560/letter-i-capitalized-via-autocorrect-in-notes-when-it-is-the-first-letter-of-a-word/p1

    My post includes a screenshot.

I can confirm that this autocorrection happens when I use the search field within a note and when searching within a pdf document.

This issue does not appear when I'm "filtering collections" or searching for an item within my library.

Any help you might be able to offer would be appreciated. The notes I've made over the past few sessions before I noticed this are a real mess!

Does this go away if you disable "Correct spelling automatically" and/or "Capitalize words automatically" in the macOS settings (search for "spelling") and restarting Zotero?

(I can't reproduce on 15.7.4 with those settings enabled. @henryartp above was an early Sequoia version, and @beniam is 26.3.1, so I doubt it's related to the macOS version.)
  • But also, when did this start happening?
  • Also, what do you have listed for input sources in that pane (Keyboard → Text Input → Input Sources → Edit…)?
  • I tried this and the issue persists:
"disable "Correct spelling automatically" and/or "Capitalize words automatically" in the macOS settings (search for "spelling") and restarting Zotero"
After I did that, the only thing that is corrected automatically is the "i" when I edit a note.

    When did this happen?:
I would guess this started when I updated to Zotero 8, but it might have happened during an os update that happened in the background.

Keyboard → Text Input → Input Sources → Edit:
This lists "U.S.", but it is grey.

    Solution?:
I opened the "Text Replacements...", which is in the Keyboard settings panel, and I noticed that i → I was one of the autocorrections listed as something I added. I have no memory of this, and I can't figure out why it didn't impact anything other than my Zotero notes! When I deleted this autocorrection, the issue is resolved.

    Question:
The mystery for me is why this only impacted Zotero notes, and none of the other typing I did...
  • Yes, we were just about to ask that — we were able to reproduce this after manually adding "i" → "I" as a text replacement.
  • Thank you both and yes, beniam, your solution has worked for me. That's a relief.

In terms of when it started happening for me, I would say in the last two or three months perhaps. But I have been using Zotero much more during this period.

Re earlier questions, it didn't happen in an Advanced Search window.
