Zotero 8 not renaming attachments

Good morning all,

There seems to be a problem with the automatic renaming of attachments, as the feature stopped working this morning: all new attachments are keeping their original file name instead.

Of course, the settings are as usual.

Any ideas as to why it's not working as intented?
Many thanks,
N.E.
  • How did you add those? Can you provide steps to reproduce this with a newly added item?

Also, your screenshot shows attachment titles. Can you show the attachment item pane, which lists the filenames as well?
  • Steps to reproduce:

    1. Start Zotero.
    2. Find whatever article we want to add the file to
    3. Find the file in file explorer
    4. Drag and drop the file into the corresponding article entry

What i expect to see: file gets added and attachment title gets changed to "PDF", while file gets renamed according to filename format.

What happens now: file gets added but both the attachment title and file name stay the same, which is to say identical to the original file name.
  • When the item has no other attachments? The behavior you describe is correct if there's already an attachment on the item, but it shouldn't do that for the first attachment.
  • If you're seeing this for the first attachment, can you reproduce it in Troubleshooting Mode (Help → "Restart in Troubleshooting Mode…”), which temporarily disables all plugins?

Ah, OK, this is in a group library. That's a bug. We don't currently expose a custom filename format in group libraries, but it should still rename and retitle properly. We'll fix. Thanks.
  • Automatic renaming is re-enabled in group libraries in Zotero 8.0.1. This will be configurable by group admins in a future update.
  • Hello,

The automatic renaming in group libraries still doesn't seem to work in Zotero 8.0.4. Is this still something we need to wait on the configuration update for even if we're the group owner, or is there a setting somewhere I should check that I might be missing.

Thanks in advance for the help.
  • Can you say more? It should work, though as noted above it won't respect any custom rename formats; it'll just use the default.
  • Ahh, ok, I might have misunderstood. My assumption from dstillman's message was that the custom filename not being exposed to group libraries was causing the bug where things weren't renaming and retitling properly, as you could use the new custom filename formatting system in group libraries in Zotero 7. But from what your saying, it seems like that's just not a feature that's being supported anymore?
  • I have been using the custom file renaming as a core part of a workflow in a group library. I now cannot use custom file renaming to rename file attachments in the group library in Zotero 8. Does this mean I need to delete Zotero 8 and revert to Zotero 7 and direct everyone in my firm to do so?
