Zotero Storage Quota

Was just annotating on a paper when the message appeared:

You have reached your Zotero File Storage quota. Some files were not uploaded. Other Zotero data will continue to sync to the server.

Does this only relate to online memory, or does Zotero have a set limit of storage in my local machine too? Never used it to the point that this was relevant.

I mainly work on it on my pc, the only reason I keep it connected online is for citing extensions on browsers, and for quick consultation through phone app. I could totally not use phone app at all if thats affected, but browser citing extensions are plenty helpful.
Does that limit ever affect either of these?

Tbh I dont plan to pay for this for now, so Id like to optimise my free experience. Yes, I appreciate the tool, and yes I understand opensource doesnt mean zero return for the people mantaining the tools. But I'm still studying and although this is a useful tool, it is not worth payment for now, schooling is expensive enough already.

That said, if my local storage is affected, there are probably lots of documents I've consulted that i could get rid off of now, as different projects end and dont require further visitation.
Is there a way to extract both the documents and metadata in organised way?
What i know: you can get a bibliographic list by selecting folders or multiple files. That list is plain text or storable document, but just keeps the info about the file, not the file itself.
What I want: a way to dump full folders or lists of documents out of my current zotero storage in a file manner that guarantees I can just dump them back in if theyre ever necessary. I want these files to mantain structure (folders, tags, etc), metadata (publication info) and annotations (file modifications: highlighting, notes, etc) as much as possible.
Is there a way to do that? Is that even necessary in relation to the File Quota message I got?

Thanks!
And sorry for the format, I realise it is a bit disorganised, first time partaking in these forums and I'm not that well-versed in Zotero

You can always store as much as you wish on your local computer. The file storage quota is only for online attachment file storage (metadata online storage is free and unlimited). Once you have exceeded your online file storage quota, no new attachment files added on your computer will be uploaded, so those files will not be available in the web library or phone apps. But new metadata will continue to be uploaded.
  • In addition to what tim820 says, you can (and probably should) disable file syncing in the Zotero preferences so that you don't see the error message anymore.
  • Right, so, can I keep a large local library, and choose specific files to sync, so that only the docs I need at each point be accessible via phone?
  • No. You can't choose which files to sync. It's all or nothing for each library
