Formatting not updating in Word Document on refresh

I have a very large document in Word. When I manually refresh the document, the footnotes with lines under them (indicating an updated citation, as auto update is off) do not appear to update once the process is complete.

- The progress bar no longer displays, indicating the process has finished (this doesn't show any live progress, but the empty bar closes once the update is finished).
- The impacted footnotes are still underlined.
- There were no error messages.

I'd like to avoid having to replace the citations with manual text, but I do need to fix the formatting quickly (as the file needs to be sent for printing and biding).

I have a debug report ID: D260933298
  • Make a copy of the document just to be safe, then try
    a) turning automatic citation updates back on in Document Prefs
    b) switching to a different style and back

Neither should be necessary, but the combo should almsost certainly trigger a full update, though it'll likely take some time.
  • Unfortunately, no luck (D169831241)
  • If you click within one of the underlined ones that isn't refreshing and click Add/Edit Citation, what happens? Does it tell you that the citation was modified?
