Zotero 8.0.3 crashes with segmentation fault on macOS 15.7.4

I cannot even restart in troubleshoot mode due to this crash. See below summary below:

- **Machine Model**: MacBook Pro (Mac16,8) - M4 Pro
- **RAM**: 48 GB
- **Architecture**: ARM-64 (Native)
- **System Integrity Protection**: enabled

## Crash Details

**Exception Type**: `EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGSEGV)`
- Signal: Segmentation fault (11)
- Exception Code: `KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS at 0x0000000000000000`
- Termination: Namespace SIGNAL, Code 11

## Additional Information
- **Time Awake Since Boot**: 150 seconds
- **Uptime**: 2 minutes 30 seconds since boot
- **Process Role**: Background
- **Code Type**: ARM-64 (Native)

## Relevant Libraries
- XUL (Mozilla Gecko Engine): multiple symbols
- libnss3.dylib: NSS cryptography library
- libmozglue.dylib: Mozilla compatibility library
- Zotero app binary: 16KB

## Possible Causes
1. **Memory corruption** in XUL/Gecko engine
2. **Null pointer dereference** in rendering/DOM code path
3. **Unsafe memory access** during initialization or early startup
4. **Extension or plugin conflict** with native code
5. **Stack corruption** leading to invalid memory access

## Steps to Reproduce
- Exact reproduction steps unknown
- Crash occurred shortly after application launch (150 seconds uptime)
- Occurred on fresh boot

## Request for Maintainers
Please investigate:
1. Whether this is a known issue with version 8.0.3
2. If there are any recent fixes in development
3. Potential workarounds or steps to prevent recurrence
4. Whether this affects other ARM-based macOS systems (Apple Silicon Macs)

Before posting a long AI-generated summary, please do take the time to explain the actual problem you're experiencing.

    Are you getting regular crashes?

What are you doing in Zotero when it occurs?

    When did this start?

Does it happen if you manually disable all plugins and restart Zotero?
  • Are you getting regular crashes?
    Everytime I quit Zotero.

What are you doing in Zotero when it occurs?
    Literally nothing.

    When did this start?
    Today.

Does it happen if you manually disable all plugins and restart Zotero?
I cannot enter troubleshoot mode, since it requires a controlled restart, during which Zotero crashes.
If there's another way to safely start Zotero with disabling all plugins, please let me know.

You can just disable all plugins from Tools → Plugins.
  • I disabled all plugins. Then tried restarting via Troubleshooting mode, it still crashes when quitting.
    Starting works though as before.

What matters is what happens after you've restarted with plugins disabled. Badly behaved plugins can still affect things after they're disabled. Restarting clears all state.
  • Yes, thanks. Quitting only leads to the crash when Better BibTeX is activated. That was the culprit; I will raise the issue there.
  • BBT stalled in its shutdown handler which in some way interacted with the sqlite shutdown handler -- I used to interact with the shutdown handler but that was literally years ago, so I don't know why that is showing up again. The stall is now gone but I'm surprised it could lead to a segfault.
