Blank tab opening a PDF in Zotero 8

  • Just wondering if anyone else is having the issues I am having with the upgrade to Zotero 8. When opening a PDF, I get a blank tab, but the PDF does not display. This never occurred in Zotero 7. Not sure if it is related, but when opening Zotero, my items take a long time to load. Again, this is only happening in 8. I've taken a snippet of the blank tab:

    With all PDFs or only some?

    Can you provide a Debug ID for Zotero startup through reproducing this, using the "Restart with Logging Enabled…" option?
  • I just tried doing a debug ID, but the fault did not happen in debug mode. I will try again soon.
    Some further info:
    Clicking on the blank tab does not change the main display.
    Clicking on any of the other PDF tabs I have open does not bring up the display for them.
    I can still navigate in the navigation pane - and the preview of the pdf comes up in the right-hand column.
  • OK, I have just restarted Zotero in normal mode, and the problem has not recurred (yet). I worked for several hours with Zotero before this happened, so it may be sporadic. If it happens again, I'll try to capture a Debug ID.
    Note that restarting Zotero now takes a long time (due to the time it takes for items to load). So if it happens again in normal mode I'll let you know on this thread before trying to capture it.
  • OK, it has just happened again in normal mode, but unfortunately, the fault did not reproduce in debug mode, so I haven't been able to capture it. D41868085

    I'd guess that this is just related to the slow loading time, which can happen in libraries with a large number of annotations. This is fixed in the latest Zotero beta and will be fixed in Zotero 8.0.1 soon.
  • G'day dstillman - thank you for your patience. It seems a little more stable in 8.0.1, but it is still happening. I have gone through the forums to see what others are saying about the same issue and how to deal with it. Because the issue is intermittent, I haven't been able to capture a Debug ID. It's a long shot, but is there a way to capture debug information without restarting Zotero first? If so, when the fault happens, I could turn on debug info capture, do the operation, then stop debug capture.

    As I mentioned in the other thread, you should try the Zotero beta. If that doesn't help, and you can't reproduce it easily, provide a Report ID after it occurs.

    Intermittent fault: Opening a PDF opens a blank Tab that cannot be selected, and stops the selection of any other open PDF tabs. The left-hand panel still seem operational. To fix - restart Zotero.
    Hunch: the long loading times for items when restarting Zotero could be a contributor. Zotero 7 loaded quickly. Version 8 and beyond takes a long time to load. Whatever changed between 7 and 8 to change loading times could be the cause of this problem.

  • The only relevant information at this point is whether it still happens with the beta.
  • A possible fix is now available in Zotero 8.0.2. Let us know if you're still seeing it with that.
