iOS Crash Report: 1243988893

Attempting to create a highlight and add an annotation in a PDF
  • mvasilak Zotero Team
Hey @kerrelm, is this an issue you can recreate, or was it an one time occurence? In the former case, can you provide exact steps? Do you use a pencil by the way?
  • I can't make it reoccur, but it is occurring multiple times a session. The exact steps would be (1) I highlight a passage; (2) I tap to open the "add comment" field, and (3) when I try to write in the field, Zotero freezes for some time. It will usually unfreeze within a couple of minutes, but this is of course annoying. Yes, I do use an Apple Pencil, and this is on Ipad.

Does this happen with specific PDF files, or any item?
Do those PDF files have a very large number of annotations?
Do you also use the pencil to write the annotation comment?
You open the annotation by tapping to get the popup, where you tap "add comment", not by opening the sidebar, and tapping the "add comment" there, right?
Since you can reproduce it, can you start a Debug Log by going to Settings > Debug Output Logging > Start Logging, and either you stop the recording if the freeze occurs or if the app crashes, you will see a relevent prompt for the recorded debug log, and then share the debug log id here.
  • I had the issue again. I stopped the logging after it happened, and I got the following ID. D499814678
  • Sorry, I should’ve answered the other questions. This happens with any PDF file. The files have a large number of annotations, I would say. I highlight quite a bit, if that’s what you mean. Yes, I do use the pencil to write the annotation comment, or I tap so that I can dictate a comment. yes I am opening the annotation by tapping to get the pop-up.

The debug log you sent doesn't seem to capture any issue. It's just an app launch that resumes reading a PDF file with 75 pages and only 3 annotations. Was that the one you had the issue with?

In general, if you create annotations on a PDF file with no previous annotations, or a small number of existing annotations, do you have any issues? How about files with a small number of pages? We are working on improvements for these cases, for an upcoming version, but we need to also check if your case is different.
