Automatic file renaming and supplementary files

Hi, I'm using the automatic renaming feature of Zotero, which works pretty great, however I have a problem. I would like to also attach a supplementary pdf to an entry, but it gets renamed automatically in the same manner as a main file, adding -1 suffix, which is not very informative.

What are my options? I was thinking that adding an option not to rename a file, if there is one already, but not sure. I also use zotmoov extension, which complicates things a bit.

    Zotmoov does that, not Zotero.

    Zotero only renames primary attachments.

When you add or rename a linked file, Zotmoov does what Zotfile did - apply your chosen renaming scheme to the file (and its title, which Zotmoov sets to match the filename). But then where two files in your linked-files folder would otherwise end up with the same name, they are distinguished by appending a number to one file's name. If you want to change that name to be more informative you can append anything you like to the file name and/or title in the right pane for that attachment, eg SUPPLEMENT, GOOGLE TRANSLATION, PREPRINT, AUTHOR COPY, etc.
  • @dstillman Does it? I thought that with recent updates Zotero now renames files and ZotMoov just moves it to different directories.

@tim820 Thanks! I figured out that I can change name in the right panel and it stays changed.

  • dstillman describes current Zotero 8 behavior, yes. The -1 behavior is ZotMoov adopted from ZotFile as tim820 says.

Zotfile had its own file renaming scheme (including the duplicate filename number appending), prior to Zotero enhancing its own renaming scheme in v7. But Zotfile was not updated to make it compatible with Zotero v7. When other plugins were written to replicate Zotfile's main functions for saving "linked" files (Zotmoov and Attanger), those plugins chose to use Zotero's new v7 renaming scheme instead of reproducing Zotfile's (those schemes are similar but not identical, and implemented in very different UI's). But then those plugins also append a number to those file names for any otherwise-duplicate names in the same linked-files folder (as Zotfile did), *after* Zotero has done the overall file naming (Zotero's default "stored" files are only ever single files in single folders, so the duplicate names problem never arises ... hence Zotero's renaming scheme has no mechanism to resolve it ... AFAIK).
