Lighter themes have little effect for some PDFs

In response to this request for the old dark mode with inverted images, a change was made between versions 7.1-beta.39+0acfcd3f9 and 7.1-beta.41+355c61e6d to improve the "new" dark mode for scanned papers. This change was described as "experimental", and I didn't see much discussion afterwards about the results.

However, this change had the side effect of reducing the impact of lighter themes for several of my PDFs. For example:

7.1-beta.39 sepia:

8.0.1-beta.4 sepia:

7.1-beta.39 custom theme (background #FDF6E3, foreground #002B36):

Now that the old dark mode with inverted content has returned, can we consider reverting those changes (I think this patch is related), or improving the behavior of lighter themes?
