Zotero 8 PDF Reader Dark Mode - Contrast in figures

We'll likely be adding a separate option to invert images in Zotero 8, at least for some themes.

Are you trying to recreate the previous white-on-black dark mode exactly or just the images?
  • Please implement this feature. The way Zotero 7 inverted figures was extremely good. I would love to have an option to keep the colors of the reader (dark mode) exactly as they were in Zotero 7.
  • How can I roll it back to v7 appearance? both text and figures. I want it exactly as it was
  • Over the past year I have been using Zotero on my iPad exclusively for reading papers and textbooks specifically because of the previous white-on-black mode with inverted figures. My eyes are sensitive to light and this previous mode on a screen (especially on oled when possible) is the most relief I’ve ever had working with PDFs.

I would be fine with a toggle to invert images, but I would also like to be able to have the v7 mode as a whole.

I tried so many PDF apps without success and was at the point of building a web app to invert all my pdfs and texts (and embedded images) to use them in regular software (which would be a nightmare for file management). I was ecstatic when I realized Zotero did this for me natively since I already had been using it on all my devices but hadn’t realized dark mode had been added in Zotero v7.

In the latest Zotero beta, we've added a new "Black" theme that matches the dark theme from Zotero 7, with a black background and inverted images. We've also added an "Invert Images" checkbox that can be enabled when creating custom dark themes.
