Lag on iOS app on iPad in PDF reader when performing actions

edited 2 days ago
I've been experiencing significant lags on the iOS app on iPad. It appears to happen for any PDF when attempting to perform an action. A lag sometimes occurs just attempting to click on a word and I'm not able to click the word and the context menu does not show. It also lags sometimes once I am selecting multiple words by dragging over them. It sometimes lags when attempting to switch the color of a highlight.

I updated iPadOS to the latest version (26.2) to see if that would resolve the issue, but it did not.

Info:
- Debug ID: D993811224
- Zotero iOS Version 2.0.4 Build 417
- iPadOS Version 26.2
- iPad model number: MU102X/A
- Library size: 7.5K items

The only similar report I found was this (but that issue seems to have been fixed already):

  • Hi, the PDFs that are lagging are big PDFs (either by file size or pages count)? Do they have a lot of annotations? Or can you see even some small PDFs lagging? Does the app also lag outside of PDFs? Do you have multiple windows opened?
  • I’ve mainly been reading one PDF, and with that file it happens constantly. It has more than 1,000 annotations, now even over 1,500. The document is 16.9 MB and has 209 pages.

I have only 1 window, the zotero app, open on the iPad.
The zotero app does not appear to lag outside of PDF's, also not when just scrolling. I does also sometimes lags for scrolling after I've tried to highlight a word.

I just tried a PDF (as well as an epub) on the iPad without any annotations and then I don't experience any lag.

So there appears to be a correlation between a large number of annotations and the occurrence of a lag on the iOS app.

On the macOS app (v7.0.32) of Zotero there is zero lag when highlighting in the same document with a lot of annotations that causes issues on the iOS app.
