[Android app] PDF reader with the latest version is unresponsive

The latest version of Android (226) does not allow me to make any annotations in PDFs... **absolutely none** (highlighting, underlining, boxing, writing text, or drawing with the pencil)!

I don't know if I'm doing something wrong. The app opens correctly, etc. The PDF opens without any problems and you can select options from the top menu, but that's it. Other than that, it's completely unresponsive, even the page selector at the bottom doesn't work. Any tips? Suggestions?

With previous versions, it was sometimes difficult to make certain annotations, but now it is completely unusable, at least in my case.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Can you please reproduce it on some publicly available PDF, like one from arXiv.org and share the name of the paper? Please do this test by actually adding a fresh new PDF to your library.
Does it happen for PDFs where you have lots of annotations? Or even for PDFs with just a few? Or even for ones where there are none?

I have a Boox device for testing and it works just like it did before, so i am having trouble reproducing
  • Thank you for your response.

This happens to me with any PDF (new ones without previous annotations, or ones I have already worked on).

Before, it was difficult to make annotations, especially highlighting and underlining. It took several attempts, maybe more than five, but in the end it worked.

Writing or drawing with the pencil always worked for me, but with a very long delay. The new thing is that since the v.226 update, none of the tools work for me, including the page selection at the bottom. That had never happened before.

You can try this article, which is Open Access:

I think I found the problem: there is no response to the stylus, but there is to the finger.

With my finger, everything works, and it works since the first attempt: highlighting, underlining, drawing with my finger (with a slight delay, but it works), and the page selector at the bottom as well.

Any suggestions for getting the stylus to work? There's no problem with any of the other apps on the device, only Zotero app.

Edit: I tried using the stylus from another device, and it doesn't work in Zotero either.
  • Strangely enough, I ran into the same problem on my Onyx Boox Air 4C yesterday—highlighting had always worked perfectly, but yesterday, when I tried to make a selection either with my finger or the stylus, Zotero just started freezing and the only fix was to completely kill the process.

After several failed attempts, I updated the book’s firmware and then updated Zotero itself from Google Play, rebooted the book, but none of that helped.

I have the same problem on my Android tablet. I can move the pages and make annotations with my fingers, but not with my stylus. My device is OnePlus Pad 2 and the app version is 1.0.0-226. I am enrolled in the beta testing program.

Oh with the new 227 version that came today the pen input is fixed - everything works great now!
  • Indeed, the new 227-version works very well. In my case, even better than previous versions. Just a little lag when drawing, but I can work.

Regarding the beta versions... I am enrolled, but it seems only regular versions are available, isn't it?
