Inserting new references into Word takes a very long time

Hello,
My Word document is 125 pages long and I have 500 references.
Inserting a new reference takes 10 to 15 minutes per reference.
How can I reduce this time?

I tried unchecking the automatic update option, but when I do that, I can't insert any new references at all.
Should I create multiple libraries in Zotero? Multiple Word documents (but then again, if I separate them now, isn't there a risk that I'll lose everything?)
Any other ideas?

    You will have to say more about what happens when you uncheck automatic citation updates. That is the option that we recommend using. Splitting the document into chapters is also an option, but disabling automatic updates should work, and if it isn't you should tell us what happens and submit a Report ID
