Annotation link no longer highlights annotation

edited 15 days ago
I use annotation links to reference annotations within my notes. Normally, clicking an annotation link opens the PDF, jumps to the correct location, and visually highlights the annotation, so I can clearly see which one is being referenced.
Recently I noticed that the annotation is no longer highlighted when I follow a link. This is particularly inconvenient when several annotations are close together.

Has anyone a solution for this?
  • 1. Which version of Zotero are you using?
    2. What exactly do you mean by "annotation link" — are you clicking on the highlight or on the in-text citation?
    3. Does it still scroll to the correct page, just not highlight?
    4. Does the issue occur with newly added annotations as well?
  • 1. Currently using Zotero 7.0.30

    2. zotero://open-pdf/library/items/4I26GH3G?page=1&annotation=WA3J78PQ

The link comes from copying an annotation in Zotero and pasting it while holding Shift.

    3. It still opens the PDF and scrolls to the correct annotation, but it is no longer highlighted (previously, the annotation would fade from grey back to its original color, making it easy to visually identify).

    4. Yes, I have tested it with new annotations as well.
  • I can reproduce this behavior in Zotero 7.0.30, but Zotero 8 beta works as expected — links correctly select the annotation.

Also, why not paste without holding Shift? That will insert an active highlight and give you the fade effect when you navigate to it.
  • So the issue will be fixed with the release of Zotero 8, correct?

I just tested copying with and without Shift. It seems to depend on the program you are pasting into. I’m just so used to it because my main note-taking program requires Shift to copy links; otherwise, it only inserts text.

  • So the issue will be fixed with the release of Zotero 8, correct?
Right, as long as you don't delete the original annotation from the PDF file.
  • Perfect!

Thank you very much for your time and testing it in the Zotero 8 beta.
