Modified citation error wouldn't go away

edited 4 days ago
Working on a document recently and when I tried to add a citation I got the attached error. It wouldn't go away. I would press yes, no, whatever and still it would pop up again. Pressing escape didn't help. I finally had to force close Word and lose my work.

  • You have modified multiple citations. The window is popping up for each modified citation.

I haven't though. I attempted to modify one citation.
  • Right, but Zotero then tries to update all other citations and the error pops up. In this case, this looks like citations you tried to delete but that didn't get fully deleted (i.e. there's a citation in the document but none of it is visible). Show Word field codes to see those and fully delete them

  • I know how to show field codes thanks.

So if and when this error pops up again, I should just keep pressing cancel until it's cycled through all of the citations?

As I recall this didn't happen with previous versions of Zotero (I've been using it since 2013). I don't know when it changed, I haven't worked on a paper in a couple of years, but this is new since I last used Zotero.

    Thanks
  • This hasn't changed in the last 10 years; you can find posts going back at least that long. It's just something that happened to go wrong with that particular document of yours.

I guess I would click Yes (since there is no cancel) until.the errors go away, but you then really want to clean up the field codes to avoid other issues (I'd expect this to mess up your bibliography).
