Bug in Chrome extension: disabling Docs integration isn't fully disabling it

I've been using the Zotero Chrome integration (fully updated, Mac, Big Sur) to import sources into Zotero, which works great.

However, I don't use/need the Zotero integration with Google Docs, and I wanted to get rid of the "Zotero" menu that appears in Docs, so I went to the Zotero extension's settings and unchecked "Enable Google Docs Integration".

However, the "Zotero" menu is still appearing in Docs, even when I reload the Docs tab or create a brand-new file. On the other hand, the Zotero menu in Docs is *empty* -- it no longer has any commands in it. (When I click the menu, a tiny empty submenu appears, one line tall, and only a couple pixels wide.)

So turning off Docs integration removed all the menu commands, but it didn't remove the menu.

Please let me know if there's any info I can provide to help debug this.
  • I can reproduce. We'll fix — thanks.
  • Thanks so much! Also I just noticed, the "Z" toolbar icon in Docs is there as well in the same situation.
  • This is fixed in the Zotero Connector beta (for Firefox only), and the fix will be included in Zotero Connector 5.0.78 soon.
  • Hi @dstillman -- this bug is seemingly back! With regards to the toolbar icon. I'm suddenly seeing a "Z" toolbar button in Docs whose hover says "Add/edit Zotero citation", despite the box for "Enable Google Docs integration" remaining unchecked as it has been for years.

(There's no menu item though, which is correct.)

Zotero connector is version 5.0.190. I'm running up-to-date Chrome on a Mac.

  • Sorry, or maybe never mind -- I restarted my computer and now the toolbar button is gone again, as it should be.

I do notice that when I load a Google Doc, the Zotero button is there for a split-second as the interface loads, but is then removed.

Maybe my browser got into a weird state or there was some race condition or something, I don't know. But I think you can disregard my previous message, or I'll let you know if the toolbar button starts coming back consistently.
  • Yes, to support Google Docs we have to inject our UI - menu and button, on page load. If you disable it, Zotero Connector removes it post-load. This can fail in theory, but this is the first report since we've released it years ago.
