Bibliography entry not visible on zbib?

I tried to add a dictionary entry to my bibliography on zoterobib, but for some reason it just shows up as a completely blank entry in the list. Here is the link: https://zbib.org/783a97fca1304e22b0a8d7c669b5bae5 (The blank entry does not show up unless you edit the bibliography.)
When I copy the blank entry, it copies nothing. When I copy the full bibliography, it leaves out the blank entry. However, when I click on the blank entry, it edits the Valleskey article, and when I click on the Valleskey entry, it edits the dictionary entry that is showing up completely blank. I tried getting rid of the Greek text, but it didn't fix anything. I wonder if it's an issue with citing dictionary entries, because when I first simply entered the ISBN to automatically generate the citation it showed up fine and only started doing this when I edited it to be a specific dictionary entry instead of the whole book. I also did try manually entering it, which rendered the same result which you see.
Is there any way to fix this?
  • Thank you for reporting this. We’re aware of the issue, which affects some citation styles, and will be updating ZBib with a fix soon.

For the time being, as this only happens with some styles and only during editing (i.e. the final exported bibliography is correct), I know this isn’t ideal, but you can switch to another style, edit the item, and then switch back before exporting or copying.
  • The thing is that the final exported bibliography is not correct; it does not show anything for the dictionary entry. Thanks for the help, though.
  • In your particular case, click on the last item before the empty one - this should open the editor for the missing item. Change the item type to anything else and then back. This might remove some data from that entry, but it should fix the issue.

Do you remember how you created this item? Was it added using an identifier or imported from somewhere?
  • I've switched it to a book section, so it's showing up properly now: https://zbib.org/79ef92bf5bc840618ca2b1c0c767b932
Like I said, I first generated the source by typing in the ISBN, then I changed it to a dictionary entry from a book. I remember seeing that it had added a DOI link, and since I'm not accessing the source online, I deleted that part, as well as whatever abstract that had been generated. I might be remembering wrong, but I think it was at that point that it started showing up blank. I don't remember if I switched the item type before or after deleting the DOI. The ISBN is 9780802822451 if that is useful at all.
As I said, I tried initially to troubleshoot the issue by doing a manual entry with the same information, which rendered the same result.
  • Dictionary entries aren't listed in Chicago style bibliographies, that's on purpose
  • It's true that CMOS doesn't list dictionary entries specifically as its own kind of citation, but even so it falls under reference works (CMOS 14.130). Then I suppose the option for dictionary entry should be changed to say reference work, by that logic.

Also, I tested the dictionary entry format by making things up for all the necessary information. It worked fine.

Clearly the fact that I tried to cite a dictionary entry in Chicago isn't the problem.
  • Whoops, I referenced CMOS 18 instead of 17 like I'm using in zbib. Reference works are under 14.232 in CMOS 17.

Aside from the fact that it actually produced something instead of just showing up blank, I'm now noticing it cited the dictionary entry like a book section instead of a reference work. So I guess I just shouldn't bother with trying to make the dictionary entry function work if it's just going to do it wrong anyway.
  • We’ve deployed a fix to zbib.org. This update resolves an issue where items that couldn’t generate a valid bibliographic entry appeared empty. It also fixes a related problem where clicking on such an item would open the editor for a different item.
