merging chapters while maintaining footnote orders

I have several chapters of my thesis written separately, and I used Zotero to create footnotes for each chapter. Now, I want to merge all the chapters into a single Word document while preserving the footnote numbering for each chapter so that the numbering starts over with each chapter. How can I achieve this?

    Which citation style are you using? For most styles, just using Words functionality to start footnotes at 1 in every section, not involving Zotero at all, will work fine. If you use a style (like many legal styles) that refers back to prior footnotes (as in "supra n. 5"), this is trickier.

    I use OSCOLA. I understand how to utilize the Words functionality and restart footnotes at each section. My concern is whether refreshing a Zotero footnote in one section would affect footnotes in other sections where the same source was cited. Also, if so, does Zotero have a feature that helps with this?

    Since you're using OSCOLA, which does include supra references (and also if you want the first note to a work to be a full, not a shortened, note for each chapter), you'll want to Unlink Zotero citations before merging, so

    1. Make a copy of each chapter
    2. In the chapter copy, click "Unlink Citations" in the Zotero Word toolbar and confirm
    3. Merge documents and set up sections in Word so that Footnotes restart with every chapter.

    That's the only way to do this, no other Zotero (or non-Zotero) features or tools.
