Unable to authenticate Zotero Bridge on Onyx Boox device due to Cloudflare verification block

Hello everyone,

I am encountering a frustrating issue with the Zotero Bridge integration on Onyx Boox devices. Until recently, I could successfully connect Boox devices to Zotero without
problems. However, this has now stopped working because the login screen gets stuck on Cloudflare’s “verify you are human” challenge, preventing me from binding my Boox with my Zotero account.

• The Boox Zotero Bridge relies on the built-in NeoBrowser for OAuth login, and this cannot be bypassed by changing the default browser on the device.

• NeoBrowser appears to have become outdated or unsupported from Cloudflare’s perspective, causing the human verification challenge to fail or block entirely.

• As a result, I cannot pass Cloudflare verification and therefore cannot bind my Boox device to Zotero.

I have limited confidence that Onyx Boox will update NeoBrowser soon to fix this issue, so I wonder if Zotero admins could consider making an exception or providing an alternative authentication method that accommodates NeoBrowser.

The Boox-Zotero integration was a huge selling point for me in using both. I imagine it is the same for more people out there.

Thank you for your attention and help.

You should contact Boox. The Cloudflare CAPTCHA is necessary to protect the security of Zotero accounts and the reliability of our servers (e.g., by blocking distributed brute-force login attempts).

If Boox's Zotero integration allows you to manually paste in a Zotero API key, you could also just create one outside the app — the OAuth process creates the same API key you can create manually.

Thanks for the quick reply. I have contacted Boox and hope they can resolve this, but as mentioned, my expectations are rather low.

Unfortunately, the integration doesn't allow pasting the API key.

I suppose Cloudflare blacklisted NeoBrowser very recently as outdated/unsafe, since only a few weeks ago I had no issues with it. To my knowledge, this was the only – more or less – seamless integration between an E-Reader and Zotero, so it really is a huge pity.
  • Unsurprising to find someone else with exactly the same issue as myself! Sad to hear it happened so recently though.
