Settings reset to default and add-ons disappeared

edited 5 days ago
When I restarted Zotero recently, it all of a sudden was empty as if just installed.
I use a custom base directory, so I thought just pointing it back to the correct location might do the trick. It did so only partly. After duplicating the base directory for backup, I selected it in the Zotero preferences, quit, and reopened. Zotero now successfully found my libraries, entries, and attached files. However, I am no longer logged in to Sync and none of my add-ons are there. All settings are back to the default (like file renaming conventions, columns, import/export settings, etc.). I can see in the profile folder > extensions that the add on .xpi files are still there, but they don't show up in the settings.

Before messing anything else up, can anyone help me how I should proceed? If I log back in under Sync, would that get me my settings back? Or are they stored anywhere else?

I am on macOS (15.7.1). I use WebDAV for Sync with my iPad. My data directory is at ~ > Academia > Zotero.

Under ~ > Library > Application Support there is another Zotero folder with a Profiles folder with a profile folder matching the string in my data folder. (I did not back that one up prior to the restart, unfortunately.)

And under ~ > Library > Preferences there is a org.zotero.zotero.plist file
(Also no earlier version backed up, unfortunately.)

BTW, this happened after importing a .bib file and then restarting in debug mode for a BetterBibTeX issue I was trying to generate a debug report on Github.

  • After a lot of trial and error, what finally got my settings back was to copy my profile folder in my data directory:

(in my case that is:) ~/Academia/Zotero/Profiles/abc123.default

and use it to replace the one with the same name under:

    ~/Library/Application Support/Zotero/Profiles/abc123.default

and then make sure that that profile is the default in

    ~/Library/Application Support/Zotero/profiles.ini

    Out of curiosity:
What's the purpose of the two profile folders in the two locations and are they (supposed to be) always exactly the same?

There is no profile folder in the data directory by default. That's something you set up, and getting Zotero to use that would require starting it with a command-line flag or creating a folder at an external path in the Profile Manager. Somehow you stopped using that flag/setting, so it reverted to the default profile location in Application Support.

We don't have any way of knowing what you did here, and this is an advanced, non-standard configuration, so this isn't something we can help with.
  • Thanks for chiming in. I have no idea what I did, and how I lost it ... :P

But I'm happy the copy existed in the Data Directory, as it allowed me to use it as backup.

    Thanks for the clarification!
