Citations broken after using Word "reviewing" mode

I've reviewed the Word integration documentation and I don't see my problem described. I'm using 8.0-beta.13+d1f478fc4 (64-bit) on Windows 11.

My problem arose because I used "reviewing/suggesting" mode in Word to first suggest for deletion, and then ultimately delete, text that had citations in it. Now, I have multiple problems with the formatting of my citations.

I'm using a CMOS endnote variant required for a journal. Some superscript numbers that were at one point functioning citations have no corresponding endnotes (for instance, endnotes 12-16 are present in as superscript text in the document, but don't appear in the endnotes; the endnotes jump from #10 to #17). They appear to be proper Zotero fields, but when selected and edited from the taskbar, Zotero doesn't detect them, and brings up a blank citation insertion dialog box. Moreover, there is a big, uneditable space between footnotes 10 and 17 in the endnotes).

What can I do to recover/fix the citations in this document? I feel like maybe I will need to save it to a plain text document and manually reinsert citations? Moreover, does Zotero just not play nice with Word suggestions and deletions through that process?

Zotero citations are standard Word fields (like, say, an auto-updating date field). How well Word maintains those through the reviewing/suggesting process is outside of our control, and we don't have any particular guidance. Sometimes Track Changes and related features are fine, and sometimes people run into problems. Ultimately, if a citation is no longer an active Word field, you'd have to delete and reinsert it.

Switch to an author-date style (e.g., APA) and back to the endnote style.
  • Missing footnote and endnote numbers are entirely separate from Zotero, btw -- that's a recurring Word issue that is typically related to track changes. You can find many posts about this online entirely unrelated to Zotero
  • OK, thanks to you both. I will try switching to an author-date style and then switching back. Maybe in the future I should use author-date always when drafting, since I like to use track changes for making edits to documents but it seems likely to mess up citations (through no fault of Zotero's).
