why does zotero refs suddenly unlink and showing red in Google docs

why does zotero links suddenly go unlink and showing red in Google docs
I have zotero desktop Linux installed using chrome OS with zotero link grab all updated and running so I don't know why refs become unlinked at bottom of each page as footnotes and go red for no reason
I'm using Oscola ref style see setting screen grabs attached

thanks again
  • thx for link but I had zotero connector installed and issue happened again but only about 6 out of 118 citaceans became unlinked for no apparent reason whole time I was connected to zotero connect and online also about 10% of footnotes went back to default
  • The key point is that the warning shows up for the next operation after the one that caused the problem. E.g., if someone else edits the document, and then you later go to use the plugin, you'd get the warning, but you didn't cause it. You can make a copy of the document and use the version history to revert to a previous version and then click Refresh to try to pinpoint exactly when the unlinking occurred. We're not aware of any other causes beyond those mentioned there.
  • I see thx

but it was only me editing and I was meticulous with version history every 5 mins and didn't revert to linked refs

  • edited 10 days ago
I'm not sure what you mean by "I was meticulous with version history every 5 mins and didn't revert to linked refs". I was explaining (and the page explains) how you might be able to identify the operation that caused the unlinking.
  • I ean reverting to previous version didn't fix unlink refs issue and had to manually relink about a dozen also footnotes were reformatted back to default font size

now I cant add any citations message come up

also keep having to restart zotero Linux desktop

update I tried reducing pages below 100 as I have 104 as a message came up not to use zotero with google docs greater than 100 pages and now it works to add a reference

but that means my very important document cant go over 100 pages and I'm in serious trouble

the zotero notification of not to use zotero with google docs greater than 100 pages should have been there at the start then I would never have used zotero and went back to refworks google docs plugin that works 100%

only reason I used zotero is that there is no Oscola support in refworks

please can zotero tech team look at this issue thank you

I'm using Google chrome on chrome OS & Linux zotero desktop & chrome zotero connector in a Chromebook which must be a very popular combination of zotero hardware software use case
  • You should read the Why isn’t Zotero detecting my existing Google Docs citations? page carefully, which explains every way that Zotero citations can get unlinked in a Google Document.

Regarding documents that are 100 pages or longer, Zotero integration will continue to work, but it is likely that Zotero operations will become increasingly slow. As such, we show that warning as a recommendation to switch to a different document processor. You may continue to use Zotero, and any unlinking or any other problem you see is not related to being over 100 pages, but either due to editing the document in a way that unlinks citations, or possible bugs in Zotero, in which case you should report them to us, by making sure you follow the Reporting Problems guidelines.
  • And to be clear, reverting to a previous version of the document (after making a copy) from before the references were unlinked will by definition restore the links. The point is to find a version of the document where the links were still working and use that version and/or try to figure out based on the version history what exact operation happened after that point that might have caused the citations to become unlinked.
