Zotero word

Good afternoon I did my citations on google doc and my PI sent it back to me with google docs. I did the whole convert processing and did it as a word doc but when trying to add citations it just says the number 1 and doesn't add the citation
  • Hey I did that but it doesnt work. I am in my word document. my instructor saved it as a word doc using citations i create from google doc but when I add the ciation it just says the subscript 1 and doesnt add the doc. i followed the steps of conversion

Did what? The page is just explaining that something you or your instructor did caused the citations to be flattened, and you'll need to restore to an earlier version of the document or reinsert the citations.
  • You likely ended up here by clicking on a citation created by Zotero in a Google Doc.

To safely edit the document in Google Docs, you should install the Zotero Connector for your browser and use Unlink Citations before distributing the document to others.

To continue using the Zotero plugin in another word processor, see Moving Documents with Zotero Citations Between Word Processors. I am on word after doing the processor and it says this
  • I guess what would the solution be. I read this and a bit confused
  • From the page:
If you find that your citations have been flattened, your only options are to restore the document from a backup, re-insert the citations using the plugin, or manually edit the document's citations going forward and generate a final bibliography from a collection in Zotero without using the plugin. If reinserting citations, it may help to adjust Word field settings to always highlight fields in gray rather than only doing so when they are selected.
To be clear, this didn't happen by following the Google Docs–to-Word conversion steps. It's something else you or your instructor did.
  • Ok I am trying to re-insert the citations but it won't work. Like it keeps saying the same subscript number 1 which doesn't work
  • I don't know what you mean by that. If all the citations are flattened, the first number will correctly be 1.
  • I mean I am trying to add the citations again but it isnt adding at all
  • You'll need to say more.
  • I converted the word document my research instructor sent me on .docx to a google doc. The citations are unlinked. When I go to Zotero and add my citation. It will give me a 1 subscript but not show up in my citations or references list at the end of my page. It is doing the 1 subscript for everything. If I add a second citation it still says 1 subscript and doesn't add anything
  • The bibliography was likely also flattened, so you need to delete it and reinsert it. It will then show you the actual active citations in the document (once you add any).
  • how do i do that
  • Delete the bibliography and reinsert it with the plugin.
  • I mean how do I delete the bibliography
  • also is there any way to just do this on word since google doc is giving me a headache
  • It's just text in your document. Highlight it and delete it.
  • Like would I just go to the bibliography at the end of my page and delete it?
  • Ok also is there a way to convert this to word and just keep it there
  • If there are no functional citations, you can just save it as a .docx and reinsert everything in Word. Otherwise, you'd want to follow the conversion instructions.
  • Ok thank you and does zotero add citations as a subscript
  • The citations appearance depend on the citation style that you select in the Document Preferences of the Zotero plugin.
